Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo chose Tatsumi Kimishima to be their new CEO and not Genyo Takeda or Shigeru Miyamoto

They're waiting a year to get Reggie ready for the top.  They needed a numbers guy in Tatsumi, who will work with Reggie to get him ready for the position.  Think about it.  Why a guy like Tatsumi when he's already 65, a conservative fellow, and most of all head of HR.  It doesn't click.

But when you think about it and realize he's just a permanent interim(I know oxymoron) you'll see signs of what Nintendo is getting at.  He was the CEO of NOA, more recently head of HR.  Tatsumi's real job is to get the enviroment acclimated to a true change of command.  We've heard rumors that the eventual President could even be someone not currently with Nintendo.  That being said, and it that being believed, how much harder could it be believed that a non japanese President ever become a reality?  Being head of HR gives Tatsumi special understanding of the fragile disfunction in naming a non japanese president.  In that case, who better to usher in Reggie than a man that has closely worked with America and is well respected by his japanese peers?  It has been stated that one of Itsumi's main objectives is to get the new batch of executives to start picking up slack.

And it fits, too.  A year from now when the NX will just about to be reveal/released, Reggie would be ready to lead the Nintendo army in the stead of good king Iwata.

This is plan B, people.  The king has died and his true heir to the throne is a little too young for his kingdom.  With a Merlin or a Darthanian like supporter to get him ready to be a wise ruler, Nintendo will thrive again.  Long live the King!

Or not, whatever.

I think Yamauchi was even more ancient than that when he stepped down... Well at least he seemed more ancient

Looking at Wikipedia (which may or may not be true, of course) he would have been 77!

Hiroshi Yamauchi Born: November 7, 1927

Retired from Presidency: May, 2002

So Yamauchi let Iwata take the reins when Yamauchi himself was around the age of 74½ years old.

You're right. I confused his retirement from presidency with his retirement as chairman of the board in 2005.

Official English translation of Nikkei article about Tatsumi Kimishima -->

http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Nintendo-taps-steady-hand-to-replace-charismatic-leader?page=1

Some quotes:

He joined Nintendo at the insistence of then-President Hiroshi Yamauchi, who saw a need for someone familiar with overseas affairs and public relations. Kimishima ran Nintendo's U.S. unit for years and was posted in the country a total of nearly two decades, including his Sanwa stint.

He (Tatsumi Kimishima) will work with the company's two top developers -- Genyo Takeda, 66, and "Super Mario Bros." creator Shigeru Miyamoto, 62 -- in what is expected to be a troika.

Nintendo also plans to strengthen training of its younger generation through greater delegation of authority. For example, software development will be overseen by Shinya Takahashi, 51, a general manager who could be considered a future candidate for president. Kimishima has also mentioned the possibility of tapping someone from the outside.

The quiet Kimishima has been the object of growing hopes for a revival.
"He does not have flash but inspires a sense of stability," an industry source said.

Great stuff! cheers!
