They're waiting a year to get Reggie ready for the top. They needed a numbers guy in Tatsumi, who will work with Reggie to get him ready for the position. Think about it. Why a guy like Tatsumi when he's already 65, a conservative fellow, and most of all head of HR. It doesn't click.
But when you think about it and realize he's just a permanent interim(I know oxymoron) you'll see signs of what Nintendo is getting at. He was the CEO of NOA, more recently head of HR. Tatsumi's real job is to get the enviroment acclimated to a true change of command. We've heard rumors that the eventual President could even be someone not currently with Nintendo. That being said, and it that being believed, how much harder could it be believed that a non japanese President ever become a reality? Being head of HR gives Tatsumi special understanding of the fragile disfunction in naming a non japanese president. In that case, who better to usher in Reggie than a man that has closely worked with America and is well respected by his japanese peers? It has been stated that one of Itsumi's main objectives is to get the new batch of executives to start picking up slack.
And it fits, too. A year from now when the NX will just about to be reveal/released, Reggie would be ready to lead the Nintendo army in the stead of good king Iwata.
This is plan B, people. The king has died and his true heir to the throne is a little too young for his kingdom. With a Merlin or a Darthanian like supporter to get him ready to be a wise ruler, Nintendo will thrive again. Long live the King!
Or not, whatever.
