Forums - Nintendo - Star Fox Zero director comments on the game’s visual style

Great so let make a game similar to the GameCube version instead

Around the Network

Well, he's kind of correct.

But the game still looks like an N64 game.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

At any rate, the game looks as it does due to the fact that they're running separate 3D environments: one on the screen and one on the gamepad. Artstyle isn't why it looks technically unimpressive.

If Miyamoto is only talking about pure photo-realistic games, then I suppose I can see what he means. I mean, if the style is trying to imitate reality, then I would definitely expect said games to look similar. Seeing as how...you know...there's only one reality.

That being said, if he's implying that every game out there uses that style, then obviously he's in the wrong. I personally don't care for photo-realistic games, and there's still plenty out there for me to play on multiple platforms.

I agree. A lot of games look alike. Even though they may look good, as an designer it is a big "no no" to have everything look the same in your designs. I see where he's coming from.

A lot of games look alike to those who don't play such games. Can you at least give examples of such cases?

When we say "look alike", we're talking about ultra realistic shaders. I'm a 3D Major. I know a bit about texturing and shaders. It's nothing against the games although they all resonate with a gritty look, it's more about the engines used to render the games (Unreal) and overall the shaders. I had this rant with Kingdom Hearts 3 and Dragon Quest XI. They look insanely similar because they're both cartoon games running on Unreal. The only artistry seen is in the character design. The rest is just ya know...."Unreal it". True, the games look great but most games I see my friends playing look dark, gritty, photorealistic. I'm not saying I don't like that style because I do at times. It's like to me, everything looks like a super Lambert fest. Everything is just trying to look too real and with that, a part of creativity dies along with it.

Ehh, I dunno.

Even if they are similar, I still think most realistic games are able to express their own identities from things like characters and setpieces, but that's just me.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

You do know many companies (especially the big ones) create different engines to run different games. To say that all realistic games look the same is plain stupid. realism =/= dark gritty. Just check out pikmin for an excellent example. There are many games that may have similar textures, but the fact that every game tries to create its own unique setting is what truly makes them look different.

What's the obsession with 60fps. I'm sure no one mentioned it during 5th,6th and 7th gens.

They did the same with F-Zero X on N64... that's why it looks awful, but feels amazing.

Nintendo has always been a champion of 60 fps games. I believe even SMB was 60 fps for NTSC regions.

He just said a bullsh*t excuse. A cartoony looking game with high end graphics will not look the same as other high end games. Star Fox is like cartoony visuals and will appear vastly different than other games heck look at MK8 it has really good graphics and stands out than other games. Plus I disagree with that statement.
