A lot of games look alike to those who don't play such games. Can you at least give examples of such cases?

When we say "look alike", we're talking about ultra realistic shaders. I'm a 3D Major. I know a bit about texturing and shaders. It's nothing against the games although they all resonate with a gritty look, it's more about the engines used to render the games (Unreal) and overall the shaders. I had this rant with Kingdom Hearts 3 and Dragon Quest XI. They look insanely similar because they're both cartoon games running on Unreal. The only artistry seen is in the character design. The rest is just ya know...."Unreal it". True, the games look great but most games I see my friends playing look dark, gritty, photorealistic. I'm not saying I don't like that style because I do at times. It's like to me, everything looks like a super Lambert fest. Everything is just trying to look too real and with that, a part of creativity dies along with it.

You do know many companies (especially the big ones) create different engines to run different games. To say that all realistic games look the same is plain stupid. realism =/= dark gritty. Just check out pikmin for an excellent example. There are many games that may have similar textures, but the fact that every game tries to create its own unique setting is what truly makes them look different.
