The story was fantastic and gameplay was much improved and more varied, it was a huge step forward in game design. Half Life 2 did much the same. It could well be Valve have already come up with the story and gameplay ideas for Half Life 3 its just the technology isn't available yet. Maybe they intend to release it as a VR game for that fully immersive experience. Again we aren't there yet with regard technology.

Yeah, I'm one of those who played it when released as well, such an amazing experience. If we're being honest, games like Star Wars: Dark Forces already had more than usual Quake level of story and gameplay, but HL1 was really innovating and setting the future standards in FPS story telling and gameplay.
I liked HL2, but I was not amazed as much as with HL1 - I thought it was bit too linear, especially after what Crytek did in FarCry 1 (PC version, of course)...perhaps if HL2 released before FC1 I wouldn't feel that way, but there you have it.
I think Valve desires to make same impact with HL3 as with first two games, and I agree with your VR prediction, they're probably trying to sell another thing in package, just like Steam with HL2.
