Rocket League gets my vote.
MLG viable 3 days after release, million seller on steam, +5 million downloads though PS+, and so much influencers on Twitch, Youtube and other outlets made this title become a huge hit.

I will say rocket league. That game came out of nowhere and boom, over 5m download. It also has a good metascore. Splatoon had a similar promotion budget to mario kart and also had a multiplayer demo which seal the deal for a lot of gamer.

Edit:  RL also had a prequel that almost no one knew about.

you would say a game (Rocket League) is a sleeper hit due to 5m million downloads, but it is essentially free for PS+ members.  I would say it is fun and a contender as well. But Splatoon is also a sleeper hit this year.  nobody wanted that game to be successful and even several wii u owners doesn't seem to buy this game.  multiplayer demo is a common thing for shooters, so what do expect, they needed info about the stats on the game.  how the servers would handle it, optimize this and that.

Rocket League, Splatoon would really be contenders for the sleeper hit of the year.  Until Dawn, I don't know, maybe for some and i believe the sales are good in US and EU to merit it as a sleeper success.

well, if Rocket league wasn't free for ps plus members, that doesn't mean that it wouldnt have sold great either, it sold good on steam alone even without being free, I'm sure it would have sold good on ps4 regardless because the game was getting a lot of exposure on twitch anyway.  Although ps plus games don't get even a quarter of what Rocket league got so being free doesn't translate into a lot of downloads.  if ps plus owners don't want a game, they don't download it.  The problem that I have with splatoon being the sleeper hit winner is that it got a demo which turn a lot of Skeptical wii u owners into buying the game.  Also a lot of people were worried about splatoon sales because they were worried it was going to get the W101 marketing treatment which change a lot once nintendo announced their marketing plan for the game.

Splatoon can be a sleeper hit contender, but the winner, I completely disagree.  the game got the push needed to make the sales be to where it's right now.

it would be great to have 4-5 contenders before the end of the year and VGC would vote who would be the sleeper hit of the year as a general consensus.

Until Dawn definitely makes the cut.

Rocket League, because many didn't even know about it before it launched. It doesn't matter if it is also for PC, so it is Ori. With the difference that Ori was highly hyped before launch, thus not really a sleeper.

I'm really tempted to say Legend of Legacy, considering how fantastic its first-print edition is, and still worth just $40!

It has the potential to be another sleeper hit a la Etrian Odyssey IV (best-selling Etrian Odyssey including digital sales, but sadly rather underwhelming as a game)

Remember, Tomodachi Life was a massive sleeper hit - I believe it broke 4 million already, with at least a million outside Japan - and I don't see people here talking about it!
