I also had a friend, that his PS3 stopped reading game disks. But it continued to read movies though.
I had a similar problem. My launch ps3's disc drive stopped spinning a year and three weeks after I got it. It had the same effect as your problem, I couldn't read any discs, but everything else worked fine.
ummm.......is it still covered under the warranty? If so, give sony a call and it should be fixed in a few weeks.

now i know this is a troll thread, another 1 post.
Got mine back from Sony yesterday (as a reminder it was 1 month old and therefore still under warranty). Well in fact, they gave me a new one. The guy I saw said he was seeing a lot of these problems (I'in Luxembourg, so small scale I admit...). Delays are 4 weeks for the 40GB and 11-12 weeks (!) for the 60GB. Fingers crossed now (though I'm playing a lot of MKWii now so I wont worry until I get GTAIV...).
Elaine: I will never understand people
Jerry: They're the worst.
^^wow, 11-12 weeks for 60GB. guess it's because they don't make 60GB anymore. they can't just send a new one out.
yeah, this happened to a friend of mine and he had to get it exchanged. strange problem.
this usually happens if you insert discs incorrectly or operate the PS3 the wrong way.
Many people have a tendency to just reset the console when the game youre playing for example freezes.
To avoid damage to the lense you have eject the disc first before you reset the PS3. At least that way you will avoid alot less damage to the blu-ray lense.
It's fairly easy to six. Take $Us400, walk to your local store and buy a new PS3
