According to http://www.pocketgamer.biz/metrics/app-store/ there are 412,624 active games currently on the app store.

If you unite all of those games budgets, you couldnt make one GTA V.

Im sorry, but i dont want to spend the rest of my gaming days playing Angry Birds and Candy Crush.

Ignorance is bliss ;)

There are much better games on iOS and Android than Angry birds or Candy Crush.

LOL enlight me, name me a couple with a AAA scope.

The Apple TV won't be a competition to $300 - $400 consoles (PS4 + XBO), it will compete with 6th and 7th gen consoles + Kindle Fire TV + Nvidia Shield + other Android consoles.

Infinity Blade 1 - 3 still look great and if the Apple TV remote supports motion sensors they could be played like a Wii / Kinect game. Modern Combat 5, Dungeon Hunter 5, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Real Racing 3, GT Racing 2, Horn, Oceanhorn, Riptide GP 2, République, Epoch 2, Dead Trigger 2, Implosion and some other mobile games don't look bad either.

It can play many Telltale games in 1080p or higher, where the PS3 + 360 versions were limited to 720p (Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead Seasons 1 + 2, Back to The Future, Tales of Monkey Island, Sam & Max...), Knights of the Old Republic, BioShock, Need for Speed Shift + Most Wanted, Civilization Revolution 1 + 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown + Within, Ace Attorney Trilogy HD, Rayman Jungle / Fiesta Run, a lot of LEGO games, Deponia, Broken Sword 5, Steins;Gate and many other visual novels + JRPGs.

Classics like GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas in 1080p or higher, Final Fantasy I - VII, Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Broken Sword 1 + 2, Dragon Quest IV + V, The Longest Journey, Fahrenheit HD, Castle of Illusion, DuckTales Remastered, realMyst, Riven, Gabriel Knight, Baldur's Gate and many others are still great fun to play.

Many great indie games like Anomaly 1 + 2 + Korea, Bastion, Transistor, Her Story, FTL, The Banner Saga, Monument Valley, The Room 1 + 2, Valiant Hearts, Hitman GO, Frozen Synapse, Leo's Fortune, Galaxy on Fire 2, The Journey Down 1 + 2, Broken Age, Shadowrun Returns / Dragonfall / Hong Kong, The Inner World, 80 Days, Device 6, Framed, Badlands also found their way to iOS.

Is Apple interested in investing their own money to build studio and support third party? No?

Console spec is largely unimportant as long as they can push their product to enough people and create large enough audience,

They are not interested in pushing it that hard, and their sale is about as bad as Wii U as a console.

Apple could trounce Sony, Nintendo, and MS if they really wanted to. They sell a bazillion games on iOS without even trying. Don't poke the sleeping bear.

Luckily for Sony/Nintendo/MS, Apple looks at the dedicated game business (and rightly so) as small potatoes. Apple shipped 47.5 million iPhones in the last quarter (that's 3 months). That means in three months they ship the same amount of iPhone hardware that the PS4 + XBox One + Wii U *combined* have taken several years to ship.

If Apple really wanted to dominate this market, they likely could do so very quickly, their marketing and brand appeal is simply light years beyond the players in the current space and they would get a shit-ton of third party support overnight. It's just too far under their radar for them to care too much.

First, I don't understand the logic of comparing phone with dedicated gaming device, and second, comparing mobile with console? By that logic, Nintendo is currently destroying PS4 and Xbox One.

And for the logics you have layed out...

You do realize a certain company who had exactly same idea as you did lost millions of dollars in order to even begin competing, yes?

Business isn't that easy, and for person who made above argument - how did Ouya turned out?

You are really comparing Ouya (a small startup with a budget of a few million dollars and no previous fanbase at all) with Apple (perfect at marketing, billions of revenue + profit every quarter, hundreds of millions iOS users, all their products have very high custumer satisfaction ratings)?

So, Apple Pippin 2 incoming? Not gonna work out - for Apple I mean.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin

More to the point, what would they deliver as software? Apple is not a Videogame developer at all, and only trying to survive on third party games and brand power can't go well over prolonged periods of time.

Over $10 billion revenue (70%) paid to app developers + over $4 billion (30%) revenue for Apple to keep last year: http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/08/apples-app-store-generated-over-10-billion-in-revenue-for-developers-in-record-2014

The biggest part of the AppStore-revenues are games. Most of Apple's 30%-share will be profit with no own risk. With these numbers Apple can "risk" another iOS form factor and should "survive" if it flops.

Yes, that's true. But Smartphones are not being bought because of the games in the respective store now, do they? Thus exclusive titles don't matter at all on  smartphone/tablet device. On a video game console however, exclusives do matter. So a console without any exclusive titles will invariably fail.

Most of the billions of of Android smartphones + tablets and iOS-devices (iPhones, iPads + iPod touch) weren't being bought because of the games, but for a few millions of these devices, the gaming aspect was the main reason. Another few millions of these devices were bought mainly for other functions, but the gaming function grew more and more important.

The Apple TV and the Kindle Fire TV aren't only video consoles, they are multi-purpose devices. Gaming is only one of many things you can do with these devices, it's not even theit main focus. But that doesn't mean that they can't threaten dedicated gaming consoles or be an alternative for many gamers... if their gaming option gets "good enough", many people will ask themselves why they need additionally a dedicated gaming consoles, especially the following revisions.

There was also a time when producers of dedicated MP3-players, dictation machines, navigation devices, pocket cameras, video cameras, notepads, newspapers & magazines, pagers and many other single-purpose-objects didn't feel threatened by these newfangled smartphones & tablets... until these functions became "good enough" and were enhanced every revision.
