They make a lot of money off of their games, if there was no competition they simply wouldn't be in a rush to get them out fast - oh wait that's what they are doing now because they don't have any real competition anymore.

AMD hasn't screwed up so bad with their last line of Enthusiaste CPU's that they haven't even bother to release a new one for like 3 years now.  Menawhile Intel has updated their line completely every year and been rewarded with new buyers every year.   There is more money to be made if you continue to itterate and improve - regardless of the competition.

 

For Sony to really tighten the screws it will take either the first all-in generation from Xbox, or a new major competitior on the scene.

Sony has put out numerous games but they werent great so we pretend they didnt happen. Sony has to delay games because they need better quality control. Basically every release they had this year underwhelmed.

People also like to pretend Sony isnt competing but they are spending money on 3rd party exclusives, exclusive advertising, bundle software, etc. Thats money they wouldnt spend if Xbox wasnt competition.

My prediction is X1 will sell between 50 and 60 million units. Thats a lot of people not buying a PS4, so X1 is real competition. Sony want those sales.
