Game hasn't aged well it seems.
Is it legit to score a remaster lower than the original? It possibly is if you are disappointed in the outcome of the remastering. If, in your opinion the remaster doesn't do anything substantially better than the original game then the argument is the remaster is a waste of time and money and therefore you score it low as a way to tell people not to bother with it and stay with the original.
I have no idea if that's the case with Gears Ultimate, but it does seem like some reviewers are disappointed with the quality of the remaster.
“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” - Bertrand Russell
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

I think scoring a remaster significantly lower just suggests you're looking at it from a f'cked up perspective. There's value in old stuff even if it's aged a bit. And the tone a review is written is sometimes makes me question reviewers motives.
I have only played the beta tho and it felt fresh, absolutely loved it. But then again, I might be blinded and biased by my love in Gears. And Phil Spencer ❤
Its getting closer to god of war 3. I think after halo MC collection, reviewers are expecting the same value proposition that collection offered.

Disclaimer, I haven't played this edition.
But 37 out of 39 reviews seem to think the game has aged well...

Nope, its still a great game. I'm in the middle of it. Bear in mind it only has 1 mixed review and 1 negative review thus far.
Jeff made it pretty clear he wasn't a Gears fan going in. If it had Horde mode he would have atleast gave it a 3/5.

Honestly, I'm not sure why most reviews seem to be citing that the game hasn't aged all that magnificently with words, then post a review score that barely reflects that fact. Either it aged well and deserves a good score, or it hasn't aged well, is a half-assed remaster, and doesn't deserve a good score. When I hear "hasn't aged well", in my mind, I'm seeing a game that deserves a 7.5 by modern standards if it pulls everything off decently as a game that has aged poorly.

No, that was something added in Gears 2 and is still fairly popular today.
I listen to their podcast and without fail Jeff talks about Horde mode (waves based co-op multiplayer) pretty much whenever Gears is discussed. He has no interest in the campaigns or competitive multiplayer. Which is why he is the only critic that gave it a bad review thus far.
