I collect for a variety of consoles, mainly Nintendo, from NES to Wii U.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
I have all the Nintendo home consoles except for the N64, a Genesis, a Dreamcast, a PS2, a Game Boy and a DS. I think my favorite to collect games for has been the NES, for a couple different reasons. The carts look really nice on a shelf even if you don't have the box (as opposed to SNES, N64, or Genesis), there is an enormous variety or games in terms of scope and gameplay styles, and the games are cheaper than other retro systems. The value of NES carts has definitely gone up in the last 5 years, but when I started collecting (about 2008/9), I got a ton of classics (Contra, Mega Man, Castlevania 2, Zelda 1 and 2, Metroid, etc..) for $15 or less. The most I've had to pay for an NES game was when I bought a complete copy of Final Fantasy.
NES, SNES (+Super Gameboy), N64, GameCube (+GBA Adapter), Wii, Wii U
Two Gameboy Pockets, two Gameboy Colors, GBA, GBA SP, DS, DS lite, DSi, 3DS, New 3DS
Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast
Two Sega Gamegear
PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4
PSP, PSP Slim, PSPgo, PSVita
Xbox
I plan on adding a 32x and CD to my Genesis, as well as accompanying it with a Sega CDX. I need a Nomad, too.
As far as Nintendo is concerned, I think I only need a Virtual Boy to cover everything (as far as playing the games is concerned. An original Gameboy would be good, too, if I could find a price I liked for one that includes its battery cover.
I would like to have each version of PS123, but I don't think I'll pursue it.
I have no intention of collecting any more Xbox machines.

I have 30 plus consoles but anything sega is my sweet spot.
I have every Nintendo home console except for the GCN, and at this point I'm not buying games for Nintendo consoles not named "Wii U". I just don't feel like there's anything I need to go back for, much less become a collector of. As long as I have most of the essential bases covered for my N64 library, I'm good. I also have a PS2 (if you can call it retro) and, fun fact, a 3DS. I'll occasionally buy a PS2 game, but that's it for that.
bet: lost
I try collecting for whatever I can. However PS2 and PSP are the cheapest to collect for at the moment. I'd love to collect for GC and SNES but god damn those prices can be crazy for some games

I mostly just try to buy games that I want to play (for all consoles) instead of going for complete collections. But because my backlog now numbers in the hunderds and I am broke, I've been taking a brake.
My preference is SNES. However SNES is very expensive now so I haven't been buying too many games for it.
I wanted to collect my gamecube and wii games but then I found out PC emulators and I decided to sell most of them

I own:
NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, GBA, 3DS
Playstation, PS2, PS3
Xbox, Xbox 360
Sega Dreamcast
Atari 800 XL with disc drive
I love collecting games and consoles. I mostly focus on Nintendo but I collect anything I find at the right price. My most recent addition was a Sega Dreamcast with some games (Grandia II, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Calibur, RE Code Veronica, Ecco, Starlancer, Sword of the Berserk, and a few others)
I mostly snoop around the local pawn stores and Goodwill. I found a copy of Super Smash Bros 64 at Goodwill for $3 and an Atomic Red N64 with 2 matching controllers for $10.
