Forums - Microsoft - How come Microsoft doesn't buy valve?

Valve is a private company. Means they are impossible to buy unless Gabe wants to sell. There is no way to do a hostile takeover or anything since they have no shares listed on any stock market.

Sure Gabe will have a price, but if Valve is supposedly worth 4 billion then to actually buy them out would probably cost at least double that! Why would he sell for what they are valued at unless he was desperate for money?

Hmm, that is true. However, I think Gabe wants to retire soon. He is getting at that age where he wants to kick back and enjoy life. So he might want to sell out soon. Seems like Microsoft is the perfect candidiate.

Pretty sure he is already a billionaire? I doubt that he is that extravagant, he has no need to sell up.

Private companies are the best

Because you can't buy something that isn't for sale. Same answer for pretty much any "Why doesn't Microsoft just buy [Company]" threads.

No doubt that there's no interest in selling; nor buying for what they want. It's not just so easy as flashing your cash and, let's face it, why would Gabe want to sell when it's making so very much money?

Looking at other comments in this thread, seems everyone feels the same.

This. Ms can't buy something if it's not being sold. Some people want to own their own company and will never sell.

Yeah but he also has 2 children. He might be set on the idea of passing it all on to them when it's time for him to retire.

Not to mention that he looks like he really enjoys his job a lot. But above all, he still has to finish Half-Life 3!!!

Would be fun if he sold the company to Apple or Google, though.

Valve's actual value as a near monopoly in their market would be astronomical. I have no doubt that they could set a price way beyond $4 billion. It's been several years ago but Gabe once said that they are more profitable per employee than Google or Apple.

And, yes, Microsoft would kill to have them. That's a market that they've spent millions trying to take before failing miserably.

You can't just buy something if you have enough money, the other party also needs to want to sell his company.

Valve wouldn't want their legacy destroyed by microsoft. They are basically the PC kings. Responsible for reviving pc when Microsoft was only focused on sony. Microsoft can only spread themselves so thin. Right now Valve is only of the thriving untouchables like Rockstar but they are the last great hope to keep pc gaming alive. Lol Microsoft failed on that promise.
