Forums - Sales - handhelds sales in the US since 2000

Very interesting chart to read thanks!

Playing Xenoblade 2 before I buy Xenoblade 3 (otherwise I couldn't wait to play 3).

Can they announce a new Fire Emblem? A remake of Genealogy or Tellius would suffice !

Sony better damn well make another handheld. Smartphones and Tablets are the biggest piles of crap ever. The worst consumer devices I have ever used. Hopefully, the Steamboy sets the world on fire with the 4G model and forces Sony and Nintendo to bring out 4G handhelds.

The 3G Vita is by far the best mobile device ever made. If Sony would have ever released a 4G version, Vita would be selling 10x as much. I don't get why Japanese companies were not the first to deliver this, and I can't believe here in 2015 we still don't have 4G handhelds fom Sony and Nintendo.

Sony needs to merge Sony Mobile into PlayStation and drop the garbage android based xperia line asap. PlayStation Phones, and tablets need to take over Sony's mobile division, and make a product that doesn't absolutely suck. A PlayStation Phone with the Vita OS and PlayStation Network would be so much better than any android/ios terd it wouldn't even be funny. Hopefully someone at Sony has enough insight to realized that xperia is garbage, and they need to rebuild Sony's home and mobile electronics around the PlayStation brand, PlayStation OS, and PlayStation Network.

You think Vita would be at 120m if it had 4G?

The Smartphones and Tablets are killing the dedicated Handheld market somewhat. Though, notably enough, Tablet sales last year in the holidays were down compared to the sales in 2013...maybe there's gonna be an end to this Tablet/smartphone craze soon....

Maybe it's the advertising and name, I've heard some people refer to the 3DS as a "3D DS", plus advertising is rather low. I think with a fresh new concept, the Handheld market can spring to life again, NX Go! is our only hope.

I hope so I only use mine for 1 or 2 games that I nearly ever play because i don't see the appeal of iOS games

How to make handhelds really successful is to make a platform very easy to develope for and have good internet

Mobile is only for shovelwere like candy crush and flappy bird

Just for comparison: Since 2007 there were at least 94 Million iPhones sold in the US - that's the number of active iPhones according to this article: http://www.cnet.com/news/nearly-100m-iphones-in-use-in-the-us-new-study-shows/

Worldwide, we are looking at an unbelievable number of 700 million iPhones. Add Android and you are at 2 billion devices. Now, if we assume that only 10 percent of smartphone users ever play games on their device, we still have an install base of 200 million people. That is insane. And your reason for the dying handhelds. I know you already heard it a bagillion times, but it's the hard truth. People play on smartphones today, end of story.

DS, man...

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I'm not sure I understand the point of this post.

Yes, smart phones are insanely popular. Yes, they have crippled the handheld market. But honestly, is it a fair comparison? No one buys a smart phone to play games. They buy them to communicate with others. People buying handhelds are buying them solely to play games. They're honestly two different things.

That's why I said let's just assume 10 % of smartphone owners are playing games. It's a fairly low number and I am sure there are more. But even with a percentage as low as that, smartphones crush handhelds. On top of that, how many casual players with a smartphone will buy a handheld to play games today? It may be two different things for you, and I myself also think that a smartphone can never replace a real handheld, but it's the same to most other people. You play games, it's good enough. Candy Crush, Angry Birds and whatnot. Those games are enough for most people. They don't want no Zelda or Uncharted on the go. In the end, I don't think either Nintendo or Sony can withstand this shift in the market. I would be shocked to see another Sony Handheld at all. Nintendo might try it another time, the 3DS sold well enough. But let's say in 10 years? I don't think handhelds will be around anymore. Maybe a Sony Smartphone with buttons and support for PS Now.

Whatever, what I'm trying to say is, the market changed drastically.
