Forums - Microsoft - Kotaku: Unfortunately, Quantum Break looks a bit rubbish

I have to say that the Gamescom gameplay footage and Sam Lake's description of how the episodes work with the game don't fill me with much if any excitement either, I don't think it's harsh to say this.

People complained about QTE being a feature of The Order 1886, but at least that keeps you interacting with the enemies in the world and is used to add gameplay to what would otherwise be a cut scene you have no control over.
IMO it would have been much better to have the choice to 1st play as Jack Joyce, then either unlock the ability to play as someone from Monarch, like Paul Serene, with some QTE sections interspersed within some cutscenes enhance those areas of the game or go from Jack's point of view to Paul's when the story demands that of the game.

The gameplay side of things seems pretty much like you throw your time powers to overpower the enemy, then fire off a standard attack like gun fire or use a melee attack, rinse and repeat.
It should be much more challenging than that, to make it feel fulfilling when you manage to get passed an enemy.
Maybe boss battles will be less like shooting fish in a barrel, but even so those don't look particularly hard given that the Monarch Henchmen have the ability to function within frozen pockets of time.

Really don't get how anyone can be impressed by Quantum Break, but I guess some people may be easily pleased and this will appeal to someone that wants a game that looks more visually impressive for an XBox One title.

I keep waiting for some XB1 exclusive to entice into wanting to get one, I'm completely open minded about the platform and have been trying to approach my expectations in the same way I did for the last generation.
I guess it helped last gen because multiplats were the domain of the 360 (except for the odd few that were made with PS3 in mind first), Halo wasn't as milked as it has been by now, same goes for Forza, Gears was fresh, Mass Effect was exclusive for a long time and it hadn't been ported to PS3 yet, Fable was still pretty good too.

This gen for me the only things that would make me want an XB1 are exclusive games, because all of my multiplats will be bought on PS4.
Quantum Break really needs to be much better than it's seeming to be at this point, considering it seems like the game has undergone a complete rebuild since the last actor playing Jack Joyce was replaced by Shawn Ashmore, I doubt what we're seeing is going to be any different when you lay your hands on the game.

MS hasn't really knocked it out of the park with XB1 from an exclusives point of view, especially with the extra long gaps in releases of those games, most titles on XB1 you can get on either the 360 or the PC.
I want Microsoft to do better than this, especially with a game that's been in development for as long as Quantum Break has, I want them to deliver on their exclusives, because they need to out of necessity this generation, but they don't seem to be doing so at this point.

They might be right who knows. We wont know until we play it. I remember Titanfall looked so amazing to me I already had a PS4 and went out and got an X1 as well. Returned the whole system the very next weekend. The game was trash and just made me want to play BF4.

I guess he forgot that u can skip the live action cut scenes if u dont want to watch them

But don't you then miss out on the story? Which is kind of a big deal considering how story focused this seems to be.

Not only is that an obvious issue in a story driven game but it's not like the guy's only complaining about how the story's presented. He starts off the articles pointing out issues he has with gameplay as well. Sounds like he's not having with or without the controller in hand. Not a good preview at all.

They have that printed on the wall permanently in the Kotaku office.

I can imagine.

I am one of the people who wasn't really impressed by the stage demo. To me it just came off as a little dull and unorigional, but I know that my opinion was in the minority. But after reading this preview (though the author did like the stage demo) it seems I wasn't the only one who had these issues with what we've seen so far.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

From wat ive heard its the villains side of the story.  And u can watch later.  It always soundedto me like the non live action tells the story of the hero while the live action tells the story of the bad guy

This, 100%. Anything negative towards either console wing (PS or Xbox) totally brings in the clicks.

First XCX now QB Kotaku hating on these exclusives lately.

Bets:

(Won)Bet with TechoHobbit: He(Techno) says 10 million by January 1,2014 I say 9 million by then. Winner gets 2 weeks of sig control.

(Lost)Bet with kinisking: I say Ps4 will win April NPD while he says Xbox One will win it; winner gets 1 week of avatar control.

Raichu's First Series:

First RPG?

First Fighter?

First Racer?

First Shooter?

First MMO?

First Horror?

Official Ni No Kuni Fanboy:

Familiars Captured:37

Game Beaten: 2 times almost

Times I got teary during some scenes: 3

He's actually played the game, which is more than the vast majority of us can claim. I'd say his preview holds weight.

I think Kotaku is just jealous the QB now stars Shawn Ashmore. Please stick with Anime or give a full review when the title is complete. Drama always brings in the clicks, even when it's premature. :)
