Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer says Xbox first party should be pushing harder for diversity in genre & mechanics

I'm kinda surprised Phil Spencer said this. Normally he doesn't say stupid things. Sure, some games are bought like Street Fighter, but many others are Sony exclusives solely because of market share and due to the fact that not many xbox owners will buy the game such as persona and disgaea.

Wrong witch hunt thread.

JRPGs Phil, that's the only way I buy the system. Lost Odyssey 2.

Nope, JRPG is a dying genre on consoles. Leave it to mobile gaming / handhelds.

More diversity so... Halo Wars 2?

What so a RTS on a console isn't deivesity? Probably the most lacking genre across all consoles not just Xbox.

Bladestorm Nightmare edition, tropico 5, Nobunagas ambitions and another game from german devoloper which i forgot. The PS4 has more RTS games than the Xbox right now. Many of these are also exclusive

I always thought MS' 1st party (which includes stuff like SO) has always been very diverse since the OG XB days. They got the stigma of a shooterbox from then, because the PS2 couldn't really handle FPS, but MS always had stuff like Forza, PGR, Fable, LO, BD, Blinx, Age of Empires, etc etc etc.

If they get more Quantum break/Scalebound like exclusives that DONT come to PC, my likelyhood of eventually buying one of those badboys rises exponentially.

I disagree. I think MS should be pushing Xbox as a service and definitely have all their games on Win10. That could be a lot huger than being constrained on the Xbox machine. Let's also be honest here, the effort MS put on the 360 to get the JP and EU market was commendable and they still were a distance 3rd place in both of those markets. If MS real reason for getting into games was to "own" the living room, that dream is long gone with Apple, Google, Netflix, and Amazon eating their lunch.....

Snoopy meet PS4, PS4 meet Snoopy.

Yet it doesn't sell well / score well and to top it off companies that are making jrpg (outside of square enix) are closing their studios and dying.

OK, I understand now why Phil Spencer can say stupid things and still be trusted like the messiah by some people. That's kinda sad...

You're on a gaming forum, if you don't understand a subject (like JRPG and japanese studios), ask about it before saying such nonsense.

Phil Spencer is a likable guy, but I'm starting to feel that he's simply paying lip service to Xbox fans.

He says his strategy is more about "first party franchises, and investing in franchises we own" and "we should be pushing harder on genre and control" but I see very little evidence of these strategies.

Halo Wars 2 is a step in the right direction, but I want to see Spencer and company follow through more completely on these ideas.

that was always the case and it was obvious. after the XB1 launch fiasco Don Matrick was made the scape goat and phil was painted as "the good guy". it was obviously a PR spin. dont get me wrong, all companies do it. Sony did it with Cerny and Shu, and Nintendo tried to do it with Riggie.

the thing is, even in the 360 days phil was in charge of MS's first party output. i didnt see any of this talk back then. this "more first party and more diversity" talk sure as hell was apperant back in the 360 days.

Isn't he head of Xbox? He shouldn't be saying what MS 1st parties SHOULD do, he should be saying what MS 1st parties WILL do. "We will expand our genre and control system pools."
