Can SMT x FE sell more than XCX in Japan at retail?

Yes 47 52.81%

No 12 13.48%

Maybe 16 17.98%

Leaning towards probably 11 12.36%

Leaning towards probably not 3 3.37%

Total:89

I think it will outsell X overall. FE has been a growing franchise since the 3DS, and SMT is a very loved JRPG. In Japan, it should sell very well, and decently in the West. But considering the 2 franchises it plays with, it should be well above X.

Xenoblade has a following nowadays, but I don't think it's as big as SMTxFE.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Whereas this is true... if Persona 5 does take away most of SMT x FE's sales, assuming they release around the same timeframe, it just means SMT x FE will have better legs. This is normally what happens. Most people own a PS4 or Xbox One as their primary console, and have a Wii U as their secondary console. They usually prioritize the games on those consoles first BEFORE getting Nintendo's games. Which is one reason why Nintendo games have amazing legs but not as good FW.

That being said, I do not think Persona 5 and SMT x FE will release around the same time.

You make a good point. That said, you might have oversimplified things, because it's very likely that the strength of the legs is largely determined by reviews of the game and word of mouth, whereas such things are much sparser prior to the game's week of release, causing much of the FW sales to be determined by hype and faith in the developer. With regards to your second point, it should be noted that the topic is focused on Japan sales, where there are more Wii Us than PS4s. That said, there are more PS3s that either console.

That said, if I'm going to make a prediction for Atlus's release schedule, I think it would be wise for them to release SMT x FE at least two months before Persona 5, so approximately October and December respectively. It would not be wise for them to release the games the other way around, because Persona 5 will be, in all likelyhood, an extremely long game, whereas SMT x FE will be a much more reasonable 30-40 hours. My suspicion is that if the release dates of both games become uncomfortably close to each other, they will delay one of them until 2016. As of now, they are both scheduled for Q4 2015 for Japan.

Yes, totally. The words "Megami Tensei Fire Emblem" alone will push a few sales.

I certainly hope so, Xenoblade numbers aren't exactly good.

SMT x FE would sell a lot in Japan, but overall and in the west I think XCX would sell better. I'm feeling it.

While SMT, Persona, and Fire Emblem - the games from which Genei Ibunroku #FE are derived - are all much older, that doesn't mean they necessarily have more selling power.  The original Xenoblade outsold every SMT, every Persona but Persona 4 Golden, and every Fire Emblem but the original and Awakening.  So Xenoblade has comparable selling power.  Or rather it would seem to until you factor in a major external factor:  localization.  The European release was limited somewhat, but the American release was quite frankly a disaster:  no marketing, no hype in conferences, limited printing run, and exclusive to one retailer.  And despite all that the game was on the safe track to 1mil until it went out of stock everywhere in the US.  So the game sits at somewhere between 930k and 960k, but could have easily gone past that by hundreds of thousands to come just shy of Awakening.  So I would say that - if the original is any indication - Xenoblade has as much strength as Fire Emblem, SMT, and Persona.  And given the cultural aspects of Genei Ibunroku #FE's story, setting, and setup, I would say Xenoblade Chronicles X has a far better shot at success in the west.

I completely agree with this.
