There were other great games that year like Ico and Jak & Daxter (my phone autocorrect that title THREE times!) that became legendary, too.

Yeah, there was also Silent Hill 2, which I enjoyed a lot.

It was a lot easier in them days to dish out higher scores. Reviewers are miles more critical of even the smallest things these days in my opinion. GTA3 for example. 97%? Even though it was a good game, all players at the time knew the games controls were absolutely chronic. It was never deserving of that score. Also, a skating game, 97%? Its pretty much guaranteed that will never happen again or even come close.

Basically, scores back then were higher than the norm because it was the first time 3D graphics ever really looked "good" and it wowed people more just on graphics alone. That kind of stuff doesn't wash now with reviewers or customers so it's much harder to hit the same scores.

gta 3 was ground breaking. felt so fresh...  and tony hawk  was just sooo awesome, the gameplay, the maps, the music, awesome!

and its not harder, gta5 got realy high scores too, and the gameplay is still meh at best(but who cares)

False. I played it at the time and had no problems with the controls at all.


Fair enough, I'll just disregard the literally hundreds of articals around the net rubbishing the controls of the early 3D versions of GTA....

I think it was 2001.  One of the last great N64 games but didn't sell well because people had moved on.  It was technically amazing and people couldn't believe it didn't need an expansion pack to run so well.
