If they (or anyone else for that matter) want to complete with MK, they really need to strike a deal with Disney...IMO, they have very recognizable characters for kids, and that Mickey's Speedway USA on N64 was actually quite good game...oh wait, that was also Nintendo.

I think they used the LBP IP as it had a stronger following than ModNation Racers. I preferred the tracks in LBPK, they were crazier and had more variety.

I wouldn't drop the play create share aspect, some really creative gamers out there made some outrageous tracks. On the PS4 they could make some crazy things. Leaving that feature out would be criminal I think.

I'd like a Kart racer with a battle arena and a racing deadmatch. Last time I picked up something remotely similar but fun to play was twisted metal 2012. They really need a good kart racer WITH battle arena as well.

What about "The Last place of Us"? Stay in last place too long, get eaten by clickers.

LBPK had battle arenas, although they were not as big a playground as TM, they were pretty awesome and you had the option of building your own.
