Forums - Microsoft - One of the main problems of MS' first party games

Jazz2K said:
I always considered great graphics as a plus feature but not an absolute necessity. Especially if it minimises gameplay and replay value. MS games have nice graphics and most of them sport replay value like no Sony game can offer. But I think cheerleaders from both camps have a different mindset and like their games differently. Ofc it's my opinion but Xbox gamers value multiplay and replayability while Sony gamers prefer storytelling, presentation and graphics. This is how I always viewed things especially when reading comments for many years but it doesn't mean it's true, just my personal observation.

I agree though that MS first party studios should be able to make new IPs.

The future of Microsoft depends on their ability to make new IP's. This is where the future becomes a problem. If they cannot pay someone to do it, it wont get done. They need to invest in making multiplayer ip's themselves instead of constantly looking outside to get them. Things will get costly just like the 360 era did and they will slow down their courting of third party.

No matter what genre someone likes, I can give them a great first party sony exclusive to play.

Where is the ps4 sim racer? Where is the beatemup? Where is the first person shooter?

It's ok to be a fan of something but some just overdue it...

Gran Turismo is due next year, I honestly don't know what you mean by beatemup games...do you mean like Shadow of the Beast?, and Killzone: Shadow Fall was a PS4 launch title.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

The choices have dwindled because of western tastes, but Sony still has more variety. You know full-well that Sony has their own Sim Racer and that its in development. Polyphony doesn't exactly sleep.  The first two generations of Sony consoles were more Japanese focused. The last two have been more western focused so you will see a change in what they give priority to. The only two genres  that matter which have escaped Sony exclusively are FPS and Fighting games. Currently they remedied that situation for the duration of SF5. That wont last, so they will need to fix it. Relying on third party never helps in the long run.

My biggest "problem" is, that many of their top tier studios don't have any freedom.

343 Industries - Halo Studio

The Coalition - Gears of War Studio

Turn 10 Studios - Forza Motorsport Studio

Playground Games - Forza Horizon Studio

Yeah ... give'em fuel and 'em shall come.

Ex Graphics Whore.

There are plenty of unique, non-shooter and non-racer Xbox IPs and exclusives. All this is a bit of a myth IMO.
By "variety", most people on this forum seem to refer to RPGs. If that's the only genre you play, then sure, Xbox isn't for you. But there are millions upon millions of gamers not interested in them and Xbox is great for all those players IMO.

I know of Alan Wake, Blue Dragon, Beautiful Katamari, and Viva Pinata during XB360's generation

The problem is that they all went for the same look and feel. Also, that the one that is different, Fable, got gutted into useless spin-offs. They need more colouful games. The grey, brown and realistic can't always be the answer.

Also, look at how Nintendo exclusives like Bayonetta and Xenoblade manage to look amazing without all the horse power of the new consoles. A good art design makes great strides and the general public can't tell nor cares about wich tech is behind it, they care about how pleasing what they are looking at is. If anything RYSE is actually the perfect example of a game everyone already forget because graphics don't leave an impression without good gameplay. The order is also in the same ballpark.

Remember when Bioshock & Mass Effect were Xbox exclusives? The problem is that Microsoft couldn't acquire those developers. They just don't have enough first parties to match Sony, and they are seen as lacking innovation as their top exclusives are all sequels.

Have to agree with Fable 100%, there was always that potential to be the next big Action-RPG, it is very sad to see a good game with a lot of potential go downhill with each new sequel, they just ruined it...

Graphics are at the bottom of the list of any plausible "problems"
Then again... i am not oblivious to the thread's intention
