Forums - Gaming - Nintendo thinks Sony and Microsoft will steal their next console idea.

You guys are mistaking patent trolling for copying. It's litterally impossible for a multi-billion dollar company to not get sued for patent infringes once in a while.

Someone please tell me what motion controller device Philips was going to use for their CD-I successor. ;) Nintendo was the first company to make motion controls in the gaming industry a big success/mainstream hence other companies soon followed suit. It's a normal business practice and you'd be foolish to miss out on the boat. Remember the cartridge fiasco of the N64? Nintendo's stuborness to follow the course of the industry has hurt them a lot in the long run.

Not sure why fans get so insulted by it.

People can joke all they like about the WiiU but Nintendo would be foolish to let out any information about NX's unique selling point any sooner than they have to.

How long between iPhone announcement and release? Samsung announcement and release? Part of this is so as not kill momentum of the current product line but the other is the hope of one-upping the competition's features or tech.

They need to stop thinking of "unique selling points" and get their video game consoles sold on what they're used most for: video games.

Them taking a shot in the dark and targeting the "blue ocean" may have worked with the Wii, but even that only worked for 4 years (then Wii sales fell off a cliff). Otherwise, since the NES, Nintendo home console have been on the decline in units sold (in a time where console gaming keeps getting larger and larger). It's time to invest in new franchises instead of touting Mario and Zelda, and start rebuilding relationships with 3rd parties.

Sony has sold over 80M consoles with every console release, and they did it without some sort of "gimmick". Just straight up having the best games on their platforms. Whereas Nintendo has been alienating 3rd parties and sticking to the same franchises since forever, and the sales keep waning for them.

Unless their strategy, moving forward, is "find a successful gimmick that will fade into obscurity in a few years, but we'll have sold 100M units in that amount of time". I mean, I guess that works, since their consoles are always profitable from the jump, so they're always just sitting on cash, but there's gotta be a cost they have to pay that sitting on billions can't fix. Case in point: some of the big developers like Ubisoft and EA (as shitty as we think they are) straight up said they won't develop any more games for the WiiU. Nintendo may have money, but that situation means they could have more money, but they're missing out on it.

Can't blame them. I'm sure Sony is very curious about how it feels to have an install base below 30m.

If they were looking for a grave, maybe...honestly this is an industry and people are always taking ideas that are already established.

Oh, I think they're very aware of how that feels.

Sony entered the console market quite late so of course they're going to copy many of the same ideas of the market leader while introducing new ideas. Like Nintendo was affected by Atari and others before them to an extent, but it's nonsense to claim that Nintendo can influence Sony and the opposite can't be true.

Wii's motion gaming clearly took inspiration from Ps2's Eyetoy
, (As did Kinect which was more of a direct copy) Sony also influenced Nintendo to eventually use the proper concept of Analog Stick (Dual) and ditch their incomplete single analog idea (which nobody will deny that it by itself is a great innovation) Copying and polishing ideas can help technology move forward. Being original for the sake of it is not beneficial for the industry.

And there is the second screen thing, wasn't that first implemented with PSP-PS3? why do people claim Sony copied the Wii U? Second screen is the natural and expected evolution. Nobody's copying anything from anybody people!

I gotta admit though, I'm not a fan of some of Sony's more blatant software rip-offs like the embarrassing Playstation Allstars, or "Pets" for the Vita. Not to mention Crash Team Racing but at least that game was excellent.

I seriously doubt this, Eyetoy wasn't even released by the time the Wii was in planning phase. R & D takes a lot of time you know. They're not even remotely the same.

Pretty sure they already struck the Vita out of all of their records and had the memories surgically removed.

You're right, every company should just be completely open about their R & D divisions. I seriously can't believe how anyone can think this is bullshit. Nintendo is just stating the obvious here.
