I actually though about this idea as I played black flag.

Probably too much work for them to do it right with the wii u's low install base. A new graphical style could have been an easy way for them to address the low framerate in the wiiu version... Redo the voices and make it less grisly and more genuinely child friendly with a lower age rating and you could open it up to a much larger age demographic.

No. A lot of developers did this on the Wii, and people HATED it.

fifa did it and sold more then 1mio copies on wii in 2007 (ps3 1,7mio in 2007). Thats a big sucsess if you ask me, special because most wii owner werent into fifa before.

But if all it takes is a cartoony and/or colorful look to sell well on Wii U... why didn't Darksiders 2 sell better? Why aren't the Borderlands games on Wii U? Where is Team Fortress 2 for Wii U? Where is the Wii U version of Life is Strange?

Darksider 2 wasnt really cartoony/colourfull and wasnt rated e. Borderland and co arnt either.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but retexturing the AAA-games and using cel shading won't be enough to get an E-rating. They would have to change most death animations, change or ditch many weapons and moves and even change the story of most successful 3rd-party AAA games.

All that work and costs for the slight chance that the totally conversed Wii U versions would appeal to Wii U gamers?

yeah. Not only change textures sure but work a little bit more on character models, remove blood and co. It wouldnt be possivle for all games though. I doubt call of duty would work. But assassins creed would be doable

Just another example to make it more clear.

Assassins creed 4 on wii u should look similar to this in the end

in terms of gameplay, graphics. But same story, world and co as the "big games".

Splatoon was a completly new cartoony game, got marketing like a AAA title and is doing awesome. You dont need a fanbase.

There are some Nintendo fans on wii u that dont like tbird partys. Thats pretty much the "real nintendo fans" not kids. That are person who grew up with  nintendo and got the system at launch and play games like bayonetta 2. By the sales of bay2 you can guess how many people that are.

The majority of wiiu gamers are kids or people that love the cartoonish styled nintendo games. Poeple that dont care about first/third partys or publishers in general, they just want fun looking cartoonish games and they dont give a fck who made them. Thats why many nintendo titles are doing soo god, splatoon as a new ip does soo good and games like bayo2 or devils third will do very very bad. Even Xenoblade X does bad in japan compared to Splatoon and its an established "big" nintendo-franchise.

People who want realistic looking games are not on wii u. Why should they? The realistic looking games are on ps4/xbox one.  And its other way around for wii u.

And also Graphics (and marketing) are the main selling points in games. its not the quality. If it would be quality, games like destiny, cod or watchdogs which good bad reception wouldnt sell that crazy.

Some realistic looking games on wii u and their cartoony "counterparts" compared in terms of sales.

Need for Speed Most wanted U (200k) vs Sonic all Star racing transformed (460k) [dont need to talk about mario kart right?]

Watchdogs (80k) vs Lego City Undercover (900k)

Assassins Creed 4 (260k) vs Windwaker HD (1,3mio)

COD:Blops2 (290k) vs splatoon (1mil+)

Splatoon is selling well because it's a Nintendo exclusive with marketing similar to Mario Kart.  Nintendo has consumer trust and brand recognition with their gamers.  3rd parties don't.  Nintendo pushed Splatoon hard because they needed a success.  If 3rd parties need a success, they will push their games hard to their existing fans (on PS or Xbox).  There are no other ways for me to say this too you, so I will leave it at that.

Bayonetta 2's sales are not that far off of Bayonetta 1's sales (670k) vs (910k) vs (1.19m).  It's not bad if you account for how much smaller the userbase is.

You are comparing multiplat ports (with fanbases established elsewhere) to big exclusives (with fanbases established on Nintendo).  I'm honestly not sure a more faulty comparison could be made.  More apt comparisons:

Batman Arkham City (280K) vs Lego Batman 3 (260K)
Twilight princess  (7.1m) vs Skyward Sword (3.9m)

There is no set rule with cartoony vs realistic graphics and sales.  Sometimes it's appropriate and sometimes it's not.  Making cartoony games will not automatically equal sales.  3rd parties need to develop a consistent brand and consumer trust if they want sales.  It's no different than any other product on the planet.

Make Nintendoish games.

Can't wait for The Zelder Scrolls 3: Breath of The Wild Hunt!

Bayonetta 2 and ZombiU are both overtracked by ~200K each (Bayonetta 2: ~470K, ZombiU: ~650K). Both are pretty much commercial failures. Esiar has the right idea to make 3rd party games successful on Nintendo consoles in general.

What makes you so sure about that? That FIFA was the first game on Wii (and PS3), but since you mentioned sports games...

Madden 08 with realistic graphics ...870k -> Madden 09 "All-Play" (that name should tell you enough)....830k -> Madden 10 (which got WORSE) -> sales dropping every year.

NBA Live 09 All-Play....220k -> NBA 2k10 with realistic graphics -> 400k.

That is true, but western developers barely push their cartoon-esque IPs compared to the "hardcore" titles. Activision already has Skylanders on the U, Ubisoft made Rayman Legends for the WiiU. They don't really make that many games that would attract the WiiU audience, or at least, they don't focus on them because their other franchises are so much more profitable elsewhere. EA has a lot of cartoony, family friendly titles, but they are still boycotting the WiiU due to Nintendo not accepting their Origin deal.

but even then those games didnt exactly do well on Wii U either. Hell the PS3 AND 4 version of Rayman Legends sold better. You can make the argument for PS3 having way more consoles, but the 4 version was a late port

you're picking one year out of the many years those systems were on the market? why compare it to PS3 at its worse, lets look at all the years AFTER which are more important. Hell you left out 360 which im sure did better in all versions

Actually releasing the games with no bullshit delays and gimped features is all it takes. the OP is just a hater talking the cliche cartoon graphics.

It's too late now for Wii U.

The audience for third party games is on Sony/MS ... I think Nintendo is just better off going a different route at this point.

In the Fusion setup at least they would have the whole "you can play a real Madden/COD/Resident Evil on the road!" if they go the shared library route, I think third parties might bite on a unified platform. At least for a year or two.

stop living in your dream and wake up to reality. nintendo always had and always will have the audience for third party games (for all kinds of good games, actually). It's just not possible to buy games that don't exist.
