Forums - Gaming Discussion - Porn industry may be decider in Blu-ray, HD-DVD battle

Macworld predicts that the HD-DVD vs. blu-ray format war's result may depend on porn industry*. First the adult entertainment companies, such as Digital Playground, decided to use blu-ray discs because it has large storage capacity and Sony's PS3 supports it. However, several sources** have stated that Sony won't allow adult content on the blu-ray format, and so they have adviced Digital Playground to release porn on HD-DVD. Personally I think this was a dumb decision by Sony. I mean, even if you don't support porn, you have to understand that it's a multi billion business and the competitor will take advantage of the situation. Same thing with the war between Sony's Betamax and JVC's VHS: porn industry went with VHS and look how that battle ended. Some of you may even never heard of Betamax. Do you think this will affect PS3 sales? If you think PORN was the only reason betamax failed then you are seriously misinformed. Betamax suffered because of Sony's arrogance. There is no question about that but here are the main points which seperate betamax from blu ray. Beta was high on quality but low on space/runtime. Blu ray is all about the maximum theoretical space. Sony had a tight stranglehold on which companies could make betamax players. JVC and Matsushita allowed VHS to be licensed to multiple competing manufacturers. Again Blu ray is no way a repeat of this situation as a matter of fact it was quite the opposite. By 1984, forty companies utilized the VHS format in comparison with Beta's twelve. This is in no way the case with Blu ray Sony suffered by their reluctance to sign licensing agreements with studios to have films made available in Betamax. Nothing really needs to be driven home about the studio support of blu ray does it? Betamax had a lower market share and was dwindling fast. Blu ray is now in a different league. Being bundled with the PS3 turned out to be a good idea. According to numbers released at CES an average of 6 or more blu ray movies were sold to PS3 owners. Since mid november Studios have seen a 700% increase in sales of Blu ray software. For 2007 Universal made no new announcements about releases for the HD DVD camp which leaves HD DVD with about 4 to 5 movies that aren't comming out on blu ray while the rest are being released on both. Companies like lionsgate, MGM, SPE, Fox, Buena Vista not only remain exclusive to blu ray but announced an amazing lineup for 2007. I can easily see that the studio's aren't short sighted and I highly doubt HD DVD is going to win this war on PORN alone especially in this day and age. Digg me down, and or hate me all you want, but I sure hope this shines a better light on the situation by including some important facts. In the end it does not matter because those links and rumors are incorrect anyways. http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Blu-ray_Refutes_Claims_of_Porn_Ban_Vivid_Plans_First_High-Def_Release/437

Porn Industry had a big foot in the battle for VHS...now they are not a deciding factor anymore...the WEB greatly reduced their impact. Im 25 and i never saw a dvd of porn anywhere...its all still on vhs.....they are making their money off internet now, they aint selling shit.

Sorry guys but porn is confirmed to appear on BLURAY,YEAAAAAAH!!!! "Reports came in last week from Heise (English report) claiming that the adult entertainment industry has chosen HD DVD as the format of choice. The aforementioned report, however, conflicted with a DailyTech interview with Vivid Entertainment Group founder Steven Hirsch where the exec stated his company plans on backing both high-definition formats. While other adult video companies such as Digital Playground have decided to go ahead with HD DVD first, Hirsch expressed optimism for the Blu-ray format. “It seems to me that Blu-ray has the momentum right now, due to the release of the PlayStation 3 adding a lot more players to the market,” he figured, though Vivid plans to offer all its high-definition films in both formats." http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5686

Hmm.. so it appears that there will be porn on blu-ray after all. I personally believe the Digital Playground story though, since why else would they have switched format? I think this is just matter of the left hand not knowing what the right one is doing.

and if the left hand knew what the right hand was doing, it would be disgusted! but shit yeah guys won't be getting their porn on new dvds they'll just d/l them of the damn net

This war is not going to be decided by porn. Get real, DVD sales have slowed dramatically since the net has become the #1 medium for pornography. Majority of porn revenues are now from the net. And blu-ray does have porn on it already. And digital whatever I think just got pissed because they wanted blu-ray discs and those are already maxed out to movie studios and other people ahead in the order schedule.

Actually Macworld is not the only site to make such a prediction. Check out these for example: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=111087 http://www.tgdaily.com/2007/01/11/ces2007_hddvd_blu_ray/ And as for the DVD-sales, they are actually going up, or at least that was the case in 2005: "Large Increase in Porn DVD Sales Indicates Growing Pornography Addiction" http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/dec/05121603.html The U.S. adult film industry was apparently a $12 billion dollar business in 2006, while the legitimate mainstream American cinema was worth of $9 billion. http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20070119/tc_zd/199033 (Porn outsells Hollywood) And of the 9 billion, there's a lot of material which wouldn't imo significantlty benefit from high-def, like drama, cartoons and comedy. I'd say it's action and porn fans who are the most eager to see moving picture in high definition. Of those two, porn is by far going to have more great new content by the time the format war's solution is decided.

HD-DVD seems to have better picture quality on all of the first three released Warner Movies as it is using VC1 encoding system instead of mpeg2 like blu-ray: http://www.highdefdigest.com/feature_blurayvshddvd_firstcomparison.html I've also read that HD-DVD has new exclusive studios: New Line, Weinstein and Studio Canal and Buena Vista/Walt Disney has given up on it's exclusiveness for blu-ray: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6463_7-6462511-2.html http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/19/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-state-of-the-s-union-s-division/ Please correct me if you have more up-to-date information.

Yeah, the Adult Film Industry was apparely a 12billion$$ business... BUT! if you read deeper, it was a 3billion dollar DVD sales. the other 9 is likely internet, so... read what you quote better. Leave it in context. Just because porn makes 12billion$$ does NOT mean it is on DVD sales. Let me give a example of takeing stuff out of context. President Bush added some 500million$ to the NASA budget. 500million is ALOT... right? No not really considering the 2BILLION cut he did to NASA 2 months earlier... that was not all over the news. so President bush, ACTUALLY cut the NASA budget 1.5billion. and got credit for adding 500million. That is how stuff is taken out of context. Porn makes ALOT of money. I'm an adult. I like porn, and I watch alot of porn. But most people I know, pay most of their porn money, into PPV, internet porn, and subscription porn channels. EG: TEN PPV porn will cost almost 10$ for a 24 hour view timeframe. My point is. the DVD market, is not mostly porn. I would say no more than 10 to 20% at BEST is porn. wich leaves 80to90% mainsteam discs... bluray has 80% of mainsteam. :D -kwaad
