And as for the DVD-sales, they are actually going up, or at least that was the case in 2005:

The U.S. adult film industry was apparently a $12 billion dollar business in 2006, while the legitimate mainstream American cinema was worth of $9 billion.

And of the 9 billion, there's a lot of material which wouldn't imo significantlty benefit from high-def, like drama, cartoons and comedy. I'd say it's action and porn fans who are the most eager to see moving picture in high definition. Of those two, porn is by far going to have more great new content by the time the format war's solution is decided.
