Forums - Sony - Will PS3 ever be profitable as a platform?

Ps3 has been making a small profit but its been offset by testing ps4 development before it launched

PS3 will never make any profits but it will probably remain my favourite console of all time. Such a great library, what an amazing console it is.

I'd be very surprised if the money they got from software sales didn't more than make up the hardware deficit.

Software is where the money is after all....

They did manage to lose all the moey they made from the PS1 and PS2 at the beginning fo the PS3's lifecyle, so I wouldn't be surprised.

But I thought that they had returned to profit by now.

The PS3 overall will not ever be profitable, no.

They are getting PS3 efforts in the form of PS4 profits. They invested a lot of money to make PS3 library shine. That wasnt wasted.

definitly. And thats exactly what nintendo is doing wrong. They dont invest any money in that plattform (for third party support as an example) and thats why their next palttform will fail again. You need to make you customers happy, even if you lost money, but if they are happy they will return to your enxt plattform.

Its hard to capture PS3 profit. I made Blu-ray the default medium. I have no idea how much money Sony has made because of this but it would not be captured under PS3 profit.

psn- tokila

add me, the more the merrier.

The real question is: since Ps4 is doing fine now, will it bring back the money Sony has lost with the ps3?

Yep... sony lost like 4$ bn on the ps3 & MS lost like 3$ bn on the Xbox360.

When they go out of production... will they have earned sony or ms, any profits at all? who knows.

360 lost a few billion early on, but started being profitable around 2007. 360 did very well in the long run and also had XBL to boost profits.

The PS3 situtation is different. Sony was reporting huge losses while PS2 and PSP were doing well. They also had to do massive price cuts year after year to compete with the 360.

Nope. I don't this the PS3 could ever recover it's losses. Even in it's peak years when the console should've have been selling at a nice profit, Sony was announcing tiny profits for their game division.
