Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony still not pursuing backwards compatible for PS4.

Despite news of backward compatibility on Xbox One, Sony still doesn't plan on implementing similar technology on PlayStation 4.

"The announcement didn't change," Sony Computer Entertainment head Shuhei Yoshida told Polygon. "I don't think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn't have backward compatibility."

"Backward compatibility is hard," he said. "I won't say we'll never do it, but it's not an easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that."

Edit: Thread title change.

Of course they don't.

First reason: They can't. Of course they could make an emulator for the PS3 to x86 but it would be too slow and they know this. Not to mention that an emulator would cost them a lot .

Second reason: PS Now. While this is of course a solution which aims higher, right now for people who migrated from a non-Sony console to PS4 the only way to play PS3 games is either hoping for a remaster or live in US and play them expansively via PSNow, with added delay and a worse image quality.

Of course they wont. It would then make PSNow obsolete. They spend a ton of money on Gekai just for PSNow in order to stream PS3 games with a subscription. If they did backwards compatibility, it would set them back A LOT financially and thats really the bottom line of this

PSNow and Gekai is the real reason they cant consider it right now

PS4 has had backwards compatibility for nearly a year. PlayStation Now has almost 400 PS3 titles available for next to nothing, and just like the fake BC on XBO it requires a internet connection. In addition, PS Now rentals and subscriptions work across PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PS TV, Sony and Samsung Smart TV's, and Sony Blu-ray players, with more device added over time.

Honestly, the only thing Sony has to do is allow PS+ users to stream their digital PS3/PS2/PS1 games for free, and allow PS Now purchases with the same requirment, and it will be the best BC in the industry. Instant access to 3 generations of games, full network support, all dlc included in every game.

I don't mind if they don't to BC. I honestly only used it for the first few months with my PS3, until i had enough PS3 games to play. Plus, i've already played damn near every PS3 game that i want to. I want to game in this gen, not the last.

Well, what would they remaster if they did?

Ok this made me laugh.

eh who cares really? i already have my PS3, so it honestly doesnt effect me.

Im sorry but this ALREADY is a thing on the Wii U but no one makes a big deal about it. Seems like Microsoft is getting another handicap. Nintendo had this a DAY ONE. Microsoft doesn't get credit for having this first.

Well, according to your profile, you play games you also could've played with last gen. You even bought GTAV twice. Yes, it's a better version because it is remastered but still it's a last gen game.

People have backlogs and especially last gen many people started to buy a lot of digital games, building a huge catalog with sales that also still happen. Why would you stop doing it now when you have access to them via one console?

Not really as seperate as you think. If they rolled out backwards compatibility they would lose most if not all PS Now subscribers from the PS4. I think it's stupid too to not have it but theres no way Sony is doing this. lol

Highly doubt it because PS Now is more catered towards people who 1, don't own the game in the first place, and 2, don't own the platform.

Ya, I was about to say that. I have used PS Now for a few games I missed last GEN. I would have had to buy them used, and it was cheaper to rent them on PS NOW.

I have little interest in replaying old game that I have already played on my PS3, but in my PS4. And if I did want to play say GT6 some more I would not fuck around with emulation, I would just use my PS3......

And no one said they did it first. It is just surprising because instead of only evolving the hardware a little bit like Nintendo they found a solution do emulate the whole 360 via software which many people, including me, thought would be close to impossible. And it isn't.
