I doubt we'll have to worry about that for another 4-5 years.
Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC
Shooters will die once we get to find as humans beings a cooler way of killing each other, that works great when adapted to videogame gameplay.
Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Fifa 15 on PS3 outsold AW on XB1.
And Fifa and GTA on PS4 really gave AW on PS4 a run for it's money.
There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

They were good, then CoD came along.
Seriously, just get over it. We have more variety in gaming now than ever. A genre you don't like is enjoyed by many other people? Why is that so bad? You have options. Different kinds of games are all over the place.
I think what annoys me the most is how people say "shooters" and pretend the gameplay is all the same. I don't care anything at all about CoD or Battlefield but I'll play Borderlands or Far Cry or Fallout all day long. These are games I play because I have fun playing them, like millions of other people.
So, yeah, first person perspective is never going away. Combat in video games is never going away. It's fine if you don't like it but you're just going to have to accept that other people find it enjoyable.

I don't think they are going anywhere anytime soon, but at this point, I don't care. People like these games. Who are we to impose on games other like and tell them to go away. Let them be, as long as the other kinds of games others like also come out. I'm okay with that.

Unless a genre of a series that has the capacity bust out Call of Duty-esque sales happens, I don't see shooters losing prominence. I do wish we could have more side scrolling shooters like Contra though.

While I would like to see more investments in games that aren't shooters - and compared to the heights of Modern Warfare and Halo 3, I do see more such investments - shooters aren't going anywhere. People like shooting each other in video games, they always have, and I don't see that changing.
