Forums - Sony - Will FF VII ReMake Energize Japan's Console Market?

You overestimate the power of a remake in Japan.

FF7 was the third best-selling PS1 game in Japan, with 3.28 million sales. The top game on the PS1 was Dragon Quest 7, with 4.1 million sales.

Dragon Quest 7 was remade for the 3DS in 2013, a high point in the life of the market leader. It sold 1.24 million. The earlier Dragon Quest remakes on the DS (4, 5, and 6) likewise sold around 1.3 million each to the original games' 3 million or so each.

Pokemon's G1 and G2 remakes sold about 1/3 and 1/2 of the original games.

FF4 for the DS sold half as well as the SNES version.

Point is, it is not very reasonable to expect FF7 for the PS4 to sell over 1.6 million or so in Japan. This is not a bad number by any means, but that is still less than FF13 on the PS3 or Nintendo's nine biggest Wii games. None of those could keep consoles alive and healthy.

I just don't think the Japanese like playing at home. If you've actually been to Japan you begin to understand why console gaming is not a big thing there.

If handheld gaming could produce decent 3D graphics back in 1997 ... who knows, consoles may have declined back then too.

Been to Japan, Korea, and China a combined 12 times in the past 15 months.

Korea and China are not into consoles as much for difference reasons (less tradition, piracy, PC gaming)

Japan its more of a case of the rise of mobile phones. They like to live on the go there. They want to be able to play while on the subway, or while chilling in town. Thats why it wont go back to PS2/PS1 levels, and I said that in the OP.

Right now home gaming in Japan is not en vogue. However, things can catch on, and it consoles could catch on again.

Korea has little history with consoles being big there, home gaming is not big there. Even a big part of PC gaming is not at home but rather in PC gaming centers.

China has a whole bunch of other issues, political, legel, etc. If those clear up China could get pretty big but sadly I dont see those issues getting cleared up any time soon.

psn- tokila

add me, the more the merrier.

Lol OP sound like selling some energy drink

yea the DQ remakes didn't sell that well, those were on a system with a huge userbase like the ps1/2. Also there are other FF games on PS4 so the FF fanbase will already be there. There are some hardcore fans that have moved on that will come back but it won't outsell FF15. Probably around a million, over 700k. Crisis core sold 800k in Japan.

Yes it will.

It's their most requested game.

With the due respect, none of these remakes come even remotely close to be what FF7 seems like to.

The changes between what we had in the PS1 gane and now in the PS4 seems to be huge, actually I guess it's the first time we ever got a remake like this, we still only got a teaser and it was definitely CG, but it's a PS4 game and they should be "decently" close, if it uses FF15 quality likeness.

It'll be like another game entirely, it's coming to a platform 500x as strong as the later (8x leap each gen, so 8^3), it's going to be huge.

It won't sell better than the first, original, game, but it'll very likely be a hit and should be really meaningful to boost hardware sales.

You think they care about graphics that much?  Japan has really shown that they don't really care that much.  I would say the portability of the DQ remake is probably about just as important as the bigger graphic difference between the two.

Then they need to ask US goverment to lend a money so yen can be strong again. Japan always a capitalist, i blame capitalist for economy crisis.

Good that Japanese will find consoles again. Handhelds are tough to beat in Japan.

It's not that theey care about graphics, is that the difference between both is simply astonishing.

5th gen games were the start of 3D models in gaming, and FF7 is so iconic for being one of the pioneers in doing it right, but the kinda of reconstruction we are about to see.... did you just saw midgar? It's like we are about to play it all over again but discovering it anew by doing it, the magnitude of the game and it's changes will be screaming out loud, it'll be a open invite to all past fans to rediscover it and to new gamers to go for it.

It'll be a HUGE success on Japan, and everywhere, and I think it can indeed help Japan to care somewhat more about consoles.

no i mean they really don't care very much.  That's why DQ9 is the best selling DQ of all time even though graphics went backwards a generation instead of forward.  The PS3 was out but instead they use N64 level graphics and it broke so many records in Japan.  You don't provide any evidence even though everyone is actually providing it.  Remakes are not that big, graphics aren't a big factor.  These are things that have been shown over time to be true in Japan.  Just saying because the graphic difference is bigger this time isn't a compelling argument.  The reason FF7 remake is on PS4 is because of the west, because that's what the west wants.  If it was only about Japan it would be on 3DS or vita.
