yeah, this sort of bothered me too. If Sony was possibly in talk of bringing Shenmue 3, why didn't they just fund the rest themselves? 2 mil is not a lot. I'm not so much of favor in to test if people are interested this way.

they could but they dont want it, neither wants MS or Nintendo. But it would be awesome if sony decides in the end still donating the money to make it AAA quality

I don't know.. Seems to come off in poor taste if Sony doesn't want to fund it, but then use their conference to sort of treat it as their own and to have fans fund it instead of them.

yeah but MS and Nintendo wouldnt have done anything. So whats better? this kickstarter or nothing?

I really understand kickstarter being used to already established developers that DOESN'T have any publisher or anything like that. I'm of course referring to Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstained and Mighty nr9 - but THIS? Sega OWNS that IP. Sega should be paying for this! Not the gamers. Soon enough, all the publishers have to do is pay for marketing and spend the necessery hours of developing the game, and the GAMERS will be doing the rest. We'll be paying for development and then BUY the game when it's complete. Wake up. This is just wrong

If you pay for development, you will get the game at no additional cost.

Which game is it that you still have to pay half price for it, even after backing the project?

But still, this could set a bad precedent for the entire industry to follow. It's a slippery slope my friend. Publishers hate to spend money on games, but loooves to get some from them

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I was actually shocked that Sony used E3 to promote a donation via Kickstarter.

this. i also don't understand. it may be a marketing tool, this and that.  but why would someone like Sony use its e3 conference to announce a probable game to be released for PS4 (which i think would be timed exclusive if there is a goal - X1 for 5M or something).

why use fans to donate that would be backed up by Sony. Sony would surely fund it. i have no proof but using a Sony e3 conference. instead of a normal video trailer that you wanted it to funded by fans for now, to have a prospect producer/publisher's help... look shady....

No one's really asking you to fund the game. No one's holding a gun in front of your head and telling you to "donate". If you don't want to " donate" then don't "donate" and if a lot of people think that the gaming industry is better off without kickstarter campaigns then they will not "donate" and the industry will go back to normal.

Anyways in my opinion, I think the Shenmue 3 kickstarter is there mainly so that the guys making Shenmue 3 can bring it over to PC since they didn't want it to be a PlayStation exclusive .

Though Sony helped with Capcom without kickstarter, and that is coming to PC too... o:

Sega has no interests in wasting money for this project. They allow Yu Suzuki to make with the IP what he wants if he manages to get the money for a worthy sequel. Suzuki tried asking any source of money from all big 3  for the last decade or so, and this is what sony would wanted to do as we can see just a kickstarter promotion.

What I'm saying is that this could lead to more similar projects where major publishers don't want to fund a game, so they let us gamers do it instead. And that's not how things should go done

There is also option C, which is Sony funding it themselves. They have the funds, and 2 mil is not too much for a company. They should have funded it or left it alone. They shouldn't expect fans to try to cover for some of the expenses.

What? I don't understand. If you back the project, you will receive the game.

Here's the link showing you what you receive for backing the game: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/pledge/new?clicked_reward=false

Nobody is forcing you to pay a single cent until the game is released...just like with any other game ever.

Archaic options like that are reasons why a lot of games are never greenlit. Shenmue was never been a Playstation game, you can't expect a sizeable fanbase to support a game that never came to their platform. The risks are high that the game will flop without an inkling of support from the Sega fans. Gaming is business not a charity.

You still get the game regardless if you donate or you buy it. You're just helping it 'get done faster' or even 'get it done at all'.

This is exactly what I meant. I can see this becoming a trend in the near future.

What we might end up getting is a system in which the risks shift towards gamers. Big titles are announced and funded with Kickstarter. Gamers pay with no assurance of quality. If it ends up being a poor game, the gamers lose most instead of the devs/publishers. If it ends up being a good game well sure gamers get a good game, but there is no real additional benefit to buying a game through Kickstarter compared to buying after release.
