Forums - Gaming - PS3 V XBox 360. What console should you buy?

360, definitely.

Cheaper, better games, better versions of cross-platform titles, better downloadable content and downloadable games, better back-compat unless you buy the $500 PS3.

The only reasons to buy a PS3 are if you REALLY want Blu-Ray or if you're a hard-core MGS or Final Fantasy fan.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

For me, it's all about the games. Always has been, always will be. The 360 has games that I enjoy playing, so I bought a 360.

A while back, my brother borrowed a PS3 from his friend. He hooked it up to his 720p LCD to show me the Planet Earth Blu-ray.

"Looks good, huh?" he nudged me with his elbow.

"Damn good," I said.

"Thinking of getting a PS3?"

"No."

I had to explain to my incredulous sibling that I'm perfectly happy with DVDs. I also told him that I had enough trouble convincing myself to drop $400 on a system with games that I wanted; it would be too much of a stretch for me to justify paying $400 for a system with games that I don't want.

I disagree with most of your statements, and I'll tell you why. First off, Xbox360 games aren't cheaper. Go look in a store, most new Xbox360 games are $59.99, most new PS3 games are $59.99. How is that cheaper, again? Secondly, I'll give you that alot of Xbox360 versions of Multiplatform games are better, but that's because developers are developing for 360 first and porting them to PS3.  As for Downloadable content and games, I honestly don't know. Although I have read that 360's Oblivion has downloadable content other than the Shivering Isles Expansion, so I guess I'll just give you that. As for the backwards compatability, it's true 360 has it better than the 40 GB PS3. Of course there's still 3 versions of PS3 that have better back compatability than any 360. And as for your Final Fantasy and MGS comment, that's a shallow statement. Sure they're popular games, but you sound like you're trying to say that's all PS3 has. PS3 has tons of fantastic games that Xbox360 has. The one system that's missing out on truckloads of Mulitplatform games is Wii. Not to mention PS3 doesn't come with the various problems that lots of Xbox360s do, such as the Red Ring of Death, Elites scratching discs so bad they can't be played, overheating and crashing in the middle of games. I've seen many of these problems first hand, I've played Gears of War and had a friend's less than 1 year old 360 crash less than five minutes after turning it on. These are problems that don't plague the PS3 like they do the 360, and that's why I disagree. Also, some people say they've been through several PS3s. I believe it. Nothing's perfect, but at least less than 1% of PS3s are defective as opposed to Xbox360's shameful 33%.

I'm getting sick of this RRoD talk, especially if you're going to buy a new HDMI model. 65n in the CPU and an extra piped heatsink for the GPU, it runs a lot cooler- do you really think MS are going to make the same mistake twice? No extended warranty for these models. Btw I work in a console repair shop.

I would not recommend a PS3 for BluRay movies as they are not that well built, it will just wear out the optics, drive etc. Get a hardware decoding stand-alone player or drive.

The FPS argument is rubbish- the 360 has an excellent spread of ALL game genre, it was nailed when Ace Combat 6 was released. With MS Force Feedback steering now there is no excuse not to drive on the 360.

Buy a PS3 later when they're cheaper ONLY for their exclusive titles and they're a few generations along in programming (because it sure needs it).

Sure, the PS3 can do twice as many floating-point calculations as the 360- but so what! This means bugger all to a games programmer but it's great for a filthy rich drug company wanting to exploit your console in a network cluster for free. What it has got is a SINGLE general purpose core as opposed to the 360's THREE- and this difference is holding back cross platform game development for EVERYONE.

You get what you pay for and in online gaming the 360 is superior and well established. Also, in the 360 a tiny amount of memory is reserved for this purpose so you don't have to exit your game to chat to a mate who is playing a different title.

It's a lot easier to be righteous than right.

Ummm both have some really good qualities.

PS3 = Bang for your buck. If you care at all about features you can get a 40g hard drive, a blu-ray player with HDMI 1.3, wifi and hardwire from the box, free online play via dedicated servers (which massively reduce lag), slew of fantastic exclusive games via full retail or PSN, and amazing media capabilities (picture viewer, amazing dvd upscaling, internet browser, mp3 playback w/playlists ect ect.)

360 = It's got the games now, should you be willing to pay for it you can have access to a pretty robust online experience including digital downloads for music and movies. It's got a pretty low entry fee, and if your looking for a basic entry to an HD experience it's a pretty good console. Very full fledged library of high rated games ranging in just about every genre.

My only personal say in the issue is that just watch the cost of the Xbox live gold membership, paying $60 a year to play online will very quickly push you past what you'd pay for a $399 Playstation 3. And yes you will be much more likely to find hardware failure with the 360. But the 360 does currently have the higher rated library and is cheaper if you don't need to play online for 2 years lol.

The console itself is cheaper, so that makes it, you know, cheaper.

Regardless of the reasons behind the porting problems, the fact still remains that the 360 is getting the better versions of multiplatform titles.

Truly backwards compatible PS3s are no longer sold, so the fact that Emotion Engine-equipped PS3s were sold at one point is sort of moot.

360s no longer have technical problems, either. The RRoD issue was fixed in the HDMI models, the disc-scratching issue I've never even heard of, and the only way your 360 will overheat is if you put it some place with poor air ventilation. Mine's sitting on a wire-frame rack right now, and I've never had any problems with it.

Disc scratching issues are primerally about nitwits who insist that consoles should be able to be passed from the vertical to the horizontal (or visa versa) whilst it's spinning a DVD at 12x speed and NOT expecting it to warp. Haven't you ever played with a gyro as a kid or a bicycle wheel?

It's a lot easier to be righteous than right.

It's about the games for me. So I went the 360 route first. Tons of great games and a solid online system.

Had a Wii, played its games, sold it. Once there are enough games to warrant a purchase again, I'll buy another one. Probably this summer.

I still haven't quite figured out why I bought a PS3. Uncharted is the only game that has made any kind of impression on me and I still only rented the game. It sits and collects dust most of the time. Most multi-plats go to the 360 because I prefer the controller.

Just curious, but if that's the case, why'd you sell off your Wii and not your PS3?

are we really gonna go through this?
buy whatever suits you.
i sold my 360 and bought a ps3 because when i buy a new game i dont want to come home to a broken console then having to wait a month or two for it back.
plus the ps3 has features that if bought via add-ons for the 360, ur paying well over 700 dollars. wait nvm u cant buy a hd player for the 360 anymore.
plus when buying a ps3 ur getting truehd.
