Wii U isn't an example because it clearly isn't successful. Genesis was sucessfull, Saturn was not. However, the gen still was bigger than the previous one.
It's also hard to claim that PS360 had a mid gen surge. Of course, they were up YOY every year until mid gen, but that's a pattern that can be observed in all previous gens. Consoles sales grow until mid gen. After that, they start declining and take a big blow when the sucessor arrives. So I can formulate arguments based on that.
If I decide to claim that PS4 and X1 combined will surpass their predecessor, I can use as argument the fact that they are ahead with aligned launches. Right now, we don't have arguments to claim that they will end up behind the previous gen because the only data we have is that they are doing better in the same timeframe and that points and opposite trend.
