If the Nintendo Ouya was a thing, then playing everything would have been better for that price, yes.
Because I'm sitting here debating if $300 (actually $400+ counting Pro Controller and extra extrenal drive) just to play 5 games.
I was just saying if NintendoOuya was not a thing, and it was between PS4 and NintendoPS4, I'd go with the NintendoPS4.

Um, didn't anyone tell you? You won't need an external HDD if you only want to play a handful of games.

Well, quite possibly, but when it comes to games I play a lot (mainly online), I like to have them ready to play out of convenience. (Lazy third world problems.)
So Mario Kart 8 in the disc drive and Smash on the harddrive. I think that's around 75% of the drive, counting the OS and the Mario Kart DLC. In that case, while I don't have to put any more games on it, it's possible I may want one more on there, and there's a chance it may not fit. But yeah, it's possible I could make due with just the 32GB drive.

I assume the 5 games you had in mind are nintendo first party, if that is on fact a correct assumption then the 32 gigs should be plenty, seems like most of their games clock in at under 5 gig

The thing with this idea though, is that it builds purely on Nintendo's profit from software, as margins would be nonexistent on a console for 100$, and if you're only aiming for software profit, you might as well just go third party and enjoy the benefits of the basically guaranteed higher userbase of the PS5/XB?/PC combined, instead of aiming for the PS5/XB?/PC market, but still limiting yourself to the NintendOuya userbase, which would still be considerably smaller than the PS5/XB?/PC userbase.

Not entierly first party, seeing as I've been thinking about this outside of the context of this topic. It's MK8, Smash, Zelda, Xenoblade and SMT x FE. Keeping my eye on Starfox to see how that one turns out.

You might exceed the 32 Gig then as those last three could potentially be large files.

I don't see the point of this.

It is incompatible with the whole picture. Nintendo failed to expand/invest/adapt, is constrained by tradition and has no faith in themselves and their fans. They shyed away from taking risks and now cowering in the shadow of the big Blue and Green.

Hunting Season is done...

Nintendo wouldn't get third party support even if their hardware would be stronger.

I find these assumptions "strange" and it reeks of bias to assume that PC/casuals would automagically prefer the 99$ weak hardware box with some Nintendo games on it!

Well, the Ouya never sold like the Wii (even the year it released) it has a couple of interesting indies and it always online (not a check every 24 hours, if you disconnect the ethernet cable or loose your wi-fi connection for a split second you'll be booted out of any purchased content you may have been using!

So obviously, every market segment would be more excited about a PS4 like machine with the Nintendo titles (maybe some gimmick like the amiboos... I have NO clue why some people buy them).

Anyway, just putting the "sony fans" is a bit wide and disenginious, the PS4 has almost 50% market share, if you were to add some Nintendo fans to the mix it would add to quite a lot of people... and let me tell you, PC gamers in general, like most people who buy gaming hardware favor the better bardware, chances are that if they had to have a console most of them would, like most people lately, buy PS4s or PS4tendos...

Anyway, that's a lot of text for very little.

I'm gonna be honest, I would be fine with any of these, if the Wii U were to cost 100 - 150 I probably would already own one by now, and if the Wii U was in the graphical standard that the PS4 is and had 3rd party games I would probably have little to no reason to play on a different platform, it's a win-win situation, sadly this is not the case because Ninty decided that crappy gimmicks are the future, well, that and the fact that the Wii U's hardware it's still expensive as it is.

I'm now filled with determination.

I really disagree with the ouya nintendo approach for these reasons

1) As people have shown, people would rather game on their smartphone (that also acts as a phone), rather than buy a dedicated console with similar specs to their phone (it just saves a big hassle). Nintendo is already making smartphone games, and if people truly want a nintendo experience on an inferior device, they would simply buy a 3ds (already has smash bros, mario kart, 3d land, essentially most of the wii u games in smaller form)

2) casual gamers both split to smartphone or PS4. Yes the PS4. While it may not seem like it, the PS4 is the MOST casual friendly console. It supports or will support the most casual games so far (FIFA, COD, guitar hero, just dance, ...) As stated by sony CEO, the goal was to attract the wii audience, and for the most part it is working. So casual gamers would support a PS4tendo if done properly

3) In order to make a console succesful, the console must be worth owning. Regardless of console power, the console will thrive if it provides everything (or most of everything) the other consoles can and more. The wii only thrived because the competition messed up (ps3 was way too expensive and the 360 had the red rings). Instead of creating a wii slim (could have been the wii u but the wii u was 2-3 years late) or investing in a proper gaming controller, nintendo chose to do nothing and ignore their problem (inferior wii hardware). So when the ps3 slim and xbox 360 slim fixed their respective issues, they both started to massively gain ground on the wii. This is why the ps4 is succesful, because there is literally nothing to complain about on the ps4

The problem is people don't like to buy something they perceive as crap, no matter how cheap. A system launched at $99 will Ber perceived as crap, and mocked on playgrounds, in dormrooms and in chatrooms.

At the same time people will fork over twice what they would pay for a console for something like an i-thing that is trendy and then marvel at the SNES quality games on it.

No, Nintendo should pursue something that the masses will think of as cool, whether that be a Two/Five level console or the next Wii type innovation. Speaking of Wii, it would have sold well at $400 at launch, the $250 price was only a bonus; and it's a great example of the value of image and a desirable product.

Taking the bargain basement root is the last stop before failure .

1) Assume some of the hardware costs and dont translate them to the costumer. Make it $99.
2) Make sure, make REALLY sure to produce them on China. Eliminating the import taxes for this market.
3) Make a MMO Pokemon universe. (A free to play model will fit the current market perfectly)
4) Take over China before anyone else does.
