Forums - Sony - Sony now Calls the PS Vita a “Legacy Platform” Outside of Japan/Asia

So they finally formalized it

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Now for the inevitable "handheld gaming is dead" threads. Just wait and see, they'll come

So now it's officially declared that Sony will stop developing games for the Vita?

"Outside of Japan/Asia"

So basically, nothing changed since November 2013.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Legacy platform sounds so classy! I am not surprised by this move though. It really makes me wonder if another handheld will happen. If I had to say right now.... I'd lean towards no. Mobile hardware development is too much of a beast for a handheld to contend with.

I don't see the handheld situation as dire as people make it out to be atm

I think a drop of total userbase from 230m to what is looking like it'll be under 80m in a generation is a pretty dire situation.

Then take a look at the actual games coming to handhelds and note that the West has completely abandoned them seriously limiting the genres available.

Handheld is in a dire place right now.

Wasnt last gen much higher than usual rather than this gen being much lower?

I feel sorry for the people who bought it on the promise that they would get console-quality games on the go designed specifically for the system, but ended up getting mostly subpar ports

basically confirmed. nobody has faith in the Vita anymore.

So... it's a nice way to say "We're ceasing work on the Vita"? Sounds like a system that died kinda young.
