That was me just ranting. It wasn't a direct comment to anyone here, just talking out loud.

Oh, okay. I thought you were trying to call me out or something. My bad.
But I will give one edge to Japan. I rate Western gameplay and worlds above Japan's, but nothing will beat Japanese writing:
Japanese Writers: Kojima, Takahashi, Sakaguchi, Kitase, Kato, Mikami, Miyamoto, Ueda, Kamiya, Nojima.
Western Writers: Levine, Druckmann, Houser, Pagliarulo, May.
Bonus points for anyone who can name all of the games these guys wrote without googling it!
Japanese, but I like both s2.
Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

While Nintendo is my favourite developer, and I love Final Fantasy and Metal Gear, I think overall, I like Western games more. I tend to look forward to more Western games.
I used to think that Japanese storytelling was the best, but it's been lagging behind recently imo. For now, I think western games are better. MGSV and Persona V might tip the scale back in Japan's favor, until the new Fallout and Mass Effect come out, and so on.
I respect what a lot of Western developers are doing. It seems that they are lifting gaming into a new arena where a polished product full of freedom is at the forefront of the industry (see games like GTA V and Skyrim). The games are legitimizing the industry by shying away from the weird and the niche and turning to set pieces and movie like experiences (see TLOU and Uncharted series).
However, I can't help but think of the past few games I really loved, like just had fun playing, and most are Japanese (Bloodborne, MGS series, FFXIV). Despite not doing what the Western developers are, Japanese developers simply develop fun games with fluid mechanics.
I prefer western games. Japanese games are in general too weird for my taste, and one of my least favorite genres is turn-based JRPG, which seems to be the only thing coming out of Japan lately. That's the main reason why my Vita gathers dust (or would if my daughter didn't play Minecraft on it).
I like both but if I had to pick one, I would go with japanese games. I play a lot more japanese games that I do western ones.
