Forums - Gaming - Will PS4s popularity reinvigorate the western Japanese market?

Overall, last gen was good but Japanese devs really didn't have much of a presence outside of Japan in comparison the the presence they once had in the industry.  Recently we've seen a few announcents from publishers for lot of games we generally wouldn't see or haven't seen since the PS2.  Maybe Japanese developers feel safer in publishing titles exclusively for a pro Japan branded console because of how dominant the sales are, what with their titles being niche and all.

I don't know. Sadly, I feel like a lot of Japanese devs are bowing out regardless of successful gaming devices. Konami and SEGA have opted to go mobile, with many others going out of business entirely.

Japanese are simple better in making games, espacially on a smaller budget. They simple can rely on their artistics skill and concentrate on fan service. Western devolopers need money to make AAA or they go making Indies. Thats whats actually happening now thats why the impression is that there are more japanese games right now in retail.

What has been announced?

A lot of these games are also on the PS3 and Vita, but you could logically assume without the PS4 version they wouldn't have been released in the west on those consoles.

Dragon Quest Heroes. Now if this was any other publisher, this game would be released in the west, but this is Square Enix, the same publisher who refuses to release Dragon Quest 7 on the 3DS despite the great sales of Dragon Quest 9, the highest selling sales in the west. The company that bitched out on releasing Bravely Default and practically gave away a ton of money to Nintendo since they took the risk and made all those sales. They even have more faith in the PS4 version than PS3 as it's a cross gen title that's exclusive for PS4 in the west.

Dissidia. Announced officially that it'll come to PS4 shortly after the arcade announcement.

That one Suda 51. I think his games suck, but last gen was exclusive on the Wii, went multi console between PS3 and 360, now he has a PS4 exclusive. Had two but they got rid of Lily Bergamo.

J Stars Victory +. This is coming to the west for PS3,4, and Vita, but it all three version were announced together, long after the original version which was PS3 and Vita only was released in Japan.  Jump Super Stars and JUS were ignore on the better selling DS.  They have better expectations for PS4?

Nobunaga's Ambition Sphere of Influence. PS3 and HD remaster in Japan. No announcemt in west until the PS4 version.  Last game i the series to reease in the west was Iron Triangle on PS2.

Disgaea 5. PS4 exclusive.

Some Compile Heart garbage exclusives for PS4.

Akiba's Trip 2, Natural Doctrine, Persona 5, Koei MonHun, and Star Ocean 5 that launched together or are launching together with the PS3 or Vita versions.

Onechanabra was once Xbox exclusive, now PS4 exclusive.

Some visual novels.

There's no date on Dissidia,  Disgaea 5(which is likely this year, )Star Ocean 5, or the Suda 51 game, but the otheres already have orwill be released within a years time.  That's not counting the multi console stuff either, and it's a noticeable quantity and difference in time than when the PS3 started getting Japanese exclusives.  There's also games that haven't been announced but will likely come out. Earth Defense Force  on PS2 went exclusive to 360, then multi console, now exclusive for PS4.

*edit*  E3 is just around the corner with the other events later this year, these are just the ones we know have western releases.  There could be any number of games announced in the coming month and the possibilty of releasing this year.

Just saying there seems to be a lot more niche Japanese exclusives games releasing in one year on the PS4 than there was on the Vita and PS3 seperately each past year.

There is a magical word, you know. It's called opinion.

Anyway, I agree for the most part. There are way more japanese games coming tot the west right now, but I'm not sure if it's only thanks to the PS4. Very many visual novels are coming to Steam lately. I really like this trend though.

i think that its already happening, therefore the ammount of japanese games that are appearing now for the PS4 so early in its life, and i also agree with this little thing you said

i also see more game games being localized now that seemed impossible to localize before due to all the licences like J stars victory VS + and Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax (granted that last one isnt on PS4, but i think the popularity of PS3/4 has given this devs and publishers more confidence in bringing their games over here).

Yes, Splatoon is taking over the world, one tentacle at a time!!!

FFXV and KH3 are Japanese too ^^

No I think in Japan, 5 millions ps4 , ps4 is a flop in japan.

DQ11 on 3ds with mh5 is possible

I hope the PS4 can revive the japanese market. Most eastern titles are cheap, and they can make a decent profit even if they don't sell a million outside of Japan. The 3DS has proven that japanese games can sell well on the West (Bravely Default, Tales of the Abyss, all those digital SMT sales, Professor Layton is still really popular in Europe...), so I'm sure they will do fine on a console that gets more support and sells more games.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
