Forums - Microsoft - New artworks from a mistwalker project ! (Cry on ?)

Well I'd like to think that another part of the whole N64 RPG setup was that Rpg's in general take up a digital TON of space. I mean the first epic RPG to come to the PS1 spanned 3 discs! Each disc had more space than a single N64 cartridge, so Nintendo kinda shot themselves in the foot for that market in my opinion. Sony consoles in general always seem to shift focus on having more room to work with, which is very good for RPG's. Thats one of the other reasons I think the Sony will continue the RPG legacy, it just seems to be their thing. PS1 had tons of them, same with the PS2, and same with the PSP.

Godbless, and that's entirely my point.

Dno, for any mote of respect I have for him, never really got in on the golden years of Nintendo RPG dominance....And because of that, it's hard not to have Sony JRPG blinders on.

For those that don't remember:

Nintendo NES and SNES had a virtual stranglehold on the RPG market. Every major top-tier RPG, sans Phantasy Star (God bless it) was on NES or SNES. The SNES was/still is, the best JRPG system in the history of gaming.

Problem is, the N64 was an absolute bomb in terms of JRPGs. We had a few trickle down the pipe - Quest, Ogre Battle, but no major ones. Why? N64 failed to gain Japanese momentum after launch, and developers eventually backed out of developing top-tier JRPGs on the N64, because the Playstation 1 was better, cheaper, and had a higher penetration rate. Couple that with N's total lack of ability to work with 3rd parties to create new games.

Fast forward 12 years from the Big N's launch of the 64, and we're in the same position.

Back then, Final Fantasy, Tales of, Dragon Quest, Breath of Fire, and about 50 other top-tier JRPGs were on SNES, and were going to dev on the N64. I bought in. Guess what? They never materialized.

I have the same hesitance endorsing, or defending the Playstation 3 as anywhere near the dominant JRPG console this generation - Microsoft is doing far more to win over JRPG support from developers, and Nintendo has such a commanding market lead, that there's very little reason, aside from having a game almost made for PS3 already, to develop a title exclusively for the PS3. And guess what? When was the last time you saw an exclusive PS3 JRPG be announced?

So that puts Sony in a real bad position for future prospects of JRPGs: MS has the cash, Nintendo has the hardware sales. Sony has neither. So where are the JRPGs going?

ok so now your saying i missed out on an era i did not miss out on and your saying jrpgs will go to microsoft and not sony because they will pay for it everytime...... Well first is untrue again your ASSuming (secert of Mana any one? Crono Trigger? some of my favs)

second no matter how many times you try to put nintendo in this i must say again that we are talking 360 and ps3. With that said more JRPGS will go to sony NOT microsoft. and if you think for a second microsoft will pay everyone for an RPG fail after fail after fail then you are wrong. microsoft will stop paying cause no one is buying. Look at any JRPG sale in japan (or anywhere else) for the 360..... really bad. devs are coming to ps3 due to higher demand. (and no demand for 360 in japan) and again nintendo will rule and get lots of RPGS but THIS POINT IS SONY WILL GET MORE THEN MICROSOFT.

Now stop twisting what i am saying and read!!!! Sony 1st THEN microsoft When it comes to JRPGS.......

Lets compare JRPGs and sales per system then:

Xbox 360:
Enchanted Arms: 140,000 (no JP/PAL)
Blue Dragon: 470,000
Eternal Sonata: 220,000 (no PAL)
Culdcept Saga: 70,000 (no PAL)
Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom: 210,000 (still charting, 8k/wk)
Lost Odyssey: 480,000 (still charting, 50k/wk)

Playstation 3:
Enchanted Arms: 130,000 (no JP/PAL)
Folklore: 160,000 (no PAL)
Disgaea 3: 90,000 (no PAL/US, still charting @ 2.4k in JP, unreleased in US/PAL)

Feel free to add a JRPG title not on the list that's relevant (I didn't add a few of the sub-10k RPGs for both the PS3 and X360 that never made it outside of Japan).

But atleast to me, the X360's sales are a bit better thus far: 2 JRPGs sold over 400,000 (with one still +50k/wk), 4 over 200,000 (and 2 still charting).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

@Mr. Stickball: what's Magna Carta 2?

with 7 million more systems as well. but that doesnt count for anything i bet.

My point is in the future there will be huge RPGS that hit a million on ps3 not 360. ff13 anyone? xboxs biggest JRPGS are out and not even a million and prolly wont hit it.

Im done arguing cause you are still talking about JRPGS that are out now. What im saying is sony will have the highest selling JRPGS and the best ones and no JRPG on that list compares to ff13, ff13vs, or White knight Story. but i guess u will answer this with another "fact" that i can find on this site or information that i already no like you have a couple of times.

Golv -

Magna Carta 2 is the sequal to a game of the same name on Playstation 2. It's a Korean RPG (oddly enough), but is certainly similar to JRPGs, so I lump them together, as I do with other KRPG, Kingdom Under Fire.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

OK, I see. I found some info on Gamespot, but that isn't too exhaustive.
Otherwise I agree with most of your points. Even though I could imagine the PS3 to be the winner in terms of JRPGs towards the end of this generation, the 360 will undoubtedly have a lot of them as well. Be that more or less than the PS3 will have got, exclusive or not, only a fool would not call this a success for MS.

Of course the PS3 could get more JRPGs than the X360. But for now, it's at a stalemate, and just when one would think that a slew of JRPGs would be announced for the PS3, they either go to the Wii or X360...Prologing the argument.

And again, having lived in the N64 era of RPGs, I know how quickly it can change. 2 years from now, the PS3 could have all of the RPGs. Or Microsoft, with it's Namco and Mistwalker allies, could be producing far more exclusive content on the 360 than Sony's few studios still loyal to them.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

excatly. all namco RPGS are on the ps3 just at a later date. i think this years e3 will be very cool. but thats all i was trying to say. sony will get more JRPGs just because of the fanbase in japan. i have lived through SNES, and sega all the way till now and i have owned all systems since. i was even old enough to get a NES for one x-mas.

It just doesnt make sense to put JRPGS on xbox without microsoft paying for it. and after they dont sell they will go to ps3 like namco has stated. Microsoft can only buy so many games and watch them sell 100k tops in japan before they give up.

Thats my take on it. and intill i see huge names like ff or kingdom heats, or Dragon quest on xbox then thats when ill say xbox is the RPG system but right now its not when the best and most wanted RPGS are still on playstation. Which to me makes it the RPG system.

@MrStickball

Not meaning to pick on you or anything, but I hate when people grill others on their posts due to poor spelling/grammar when they clearly can fully understand it. Since you pointed out Dno's poor 'mastery of the English lexicon' you've spelled the word 'attitude' wrong, twice!!!!! AHHH. Shame on you ;)

On topic (at least I think it is...): I haven't yet played any of the 360 RPG's but am very intrigued. LO and Blue Dragon have especially caught my attention. While I'm sure I'll be a 360 owner by the end of the year due to some of it's RPG's I believe most JRPG die-hards who have limited resources would choose the PS3 as the prospective JRPG leader and as their system of choice. Sadly, overall, JRPG's have been few and far between and needless to say, I'm incredibly disappointed with this gen so far.

Although, you do raise a good point about how buying into the 64 based on the assumption of it receiving the majority of RPG's could make current buyers weary of buying a PS3. However, I'm not overly concerned about it in this case simply because Microsoft isn't strong enough in Japan to have exclusivity of most RPG's. I'm fine with JRPG's being on both systems so as long as I can get it on one. I think the PS3 will be fine for JRPG's this gen.

@ssj12: All games cannot be entirely original. I think this looks really nice so far, if it were being offered for the PS3 as well, I'm sure it'd be heralded as THE return of Sakaguichi. It's like watching Die Hard 4, sure, it's derivative, but that was exactly what I was looking for.
