Focusing on a combination of games that are high quality (both back then and now) along with their overall influence:

1970's - Space Invaders

Pong may have been the first widely successful video game, but Space Invaders was the one that established the conventions of the medium. The game itself is great of course, delivering a fun shooting experience that olds up decades later. But the sheer number of standards started or popularized by Space Invaders is incredible. Progressively increasing difficulty, high scores, Lives, destructable environments, and seemingly endless waves of foes set the stage for the Golden Age of Arcades.

Honorable Mentions: Oregon Trail, Asteroids, Pong

80's - Super Mario Bros 3

This was a tough choice, especially with Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Pac-Man the original Super Mario Bros and more. Ultimately though, Super Mario Bros 3 gets this position for a few reasons. First, although the game is not as groundbreaking as some others, it was far from a conservative update to the series. Mario's abilities are greatly enhanced from the original, both with default abilities like sliding down hills and climbing vines and with power-ups that drastically change his capabilities. The eight distinct worlds brought explorable overworlds outside of RPG and action-adventure games, and started the now expected environmental theming. The variety of enemies and obstacles also set a new standard for level design across genres. And ultimately, SMB3 did something that the likes of Zelda and Pac-Man couldn't: set a standard that every other game would compete with for years to come.

Honorable Mentions: The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Mega Man 2, Pac-Man

90's - Doom

This choice made the 80's look simple. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game for one, and the many honorable mentions will show what I had to work with. But Doom simply deserves this spot. Not because it was the game that popularized the FPS genre. That helped, but that's not all. Years before Ocarina of Time and other console games made exploring 3D spaces a reality, Doom mastered the craft of creating 3D worlds even with pixels instead of polygons. The game created a wider community than games before it could using network cooperative and deathmatch multiplayer and a modding community. The weapons of Doom would become the staples of action games. No other game released in the 90's had such an impact. And it's pretty fun too!

Honorable Mentions: Super Mario 64, Street Fighter 2, Civilization, Starcraft, Pokemon, Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger

00's - World of Warcraft

This decade saw a number of trends in gaming. You had games developing bigger worlds, increased emphasis on online connectivity, a shift to make games more accessible to newcomers, constantly updated software and so on. One game, World of Warcraft, combined elements of all of these trends. Though the basics of WoW are not too different from earlier MMORPG's, it was made far more accessible to a newcomer through lower penalties for failure and the ability to accomplish many goals both by oneself and with others. The multitude of quests made leveling up easier than the grinding of yore, and the game's aesthetics were just cartoon-like enough to not scare away outsiders. The constant updates made the game an ever-evolving entity that changed to suit the needs of players and developers. The world was huge without requiring loading screens, despite not be too technically demanding. There is a reason the MMO genre spent years trying to copy WoW.

Honorable Mentions: Grand Theft Auto 3, Wii Sports, Resident Evil 4, The Sims, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

10's - Minecraft

The decade is still only about halfway through, but Minecraft may be hard to beat. It is the greatest success story in the history of indie game development, has encouraged the creation of more games without obvious goals, allows players to interact with seemingly infinite worlds, and the shared building projects point to a new path in multiplayer edxperiences. Though the game is flawed, it is still the best example of a new future for games in recent years, and has offered countless adventures for millions.

Honorable Mentions: Skyrim, GTA5, Dark Souls, Link Between Worlds, The Binding of Isaac
