Forums - Gaming - Konami CEO Calls Mobile ‘the Future of Gaming’ as Company Officially Shifts Focus

More and more Japanese gaming companies are going mobile, and they are focusing on it more and more until it becomes their core focus. I really, really hope this doesn't happen to Nintendo as well!!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Just take a look beside you. Square Enix started pushing fully into mobile like 4-5 years ago. Take a look at 2015, they are back into making console games (FF14, FF15, KH3, DQ Heroes, Thief series, Hitman series, Tomb Raider series, Deus Ex series) Obviously, if mobile has worked for Square, they wouldnt be making so many console games, right? Resource is finite.

Er, no. They're doing both, which is how it should be. They've released plenty of games on mobiles, consoles and PC, and they never stopped releasing games on consoles/PC when they pushed into mobile.

It shouldn't be an either/or scenario.

Not really.  They have one JRPG in development for mobile and not much else.  Square knows there's not much money from mobile.  There probably never really was.  Even Rovio is losing money in the mobile space.  As far as using it for some revenue it can be alright.  But to put your entire focus mobile after the ship sailed is ludicrous.

One devoted development studio is all mobile really needs though. The amount of work relative to console/PC games is a lot lower. It's not like other primarily console/PC studios and outside contractors don't also work on mobile games for them. They've got a decent number of mobile games coming out this year:

I counted 10, though doubt many of those are coming over probably why I haven't heard of them.  Having one dev studio on mobile isn't the problem.  Throwing your entire company into mobile is.

They were dead to me after Suikoden Tierkreis, if they dare make a mobile Suikoden I'll nuke the grave.

Agreed and that was actualy the point I was trying to make. It's not an either/or scenario. SE actually have quite a well-balanced output on consoles, PC and mobiles. Konami pushing strongly into the mobile sector shouldn't be impacting on their other gaming segments in the way it has been. It's horrible mis-management considering the strength their franchises hold (or held considering they've let most of them fall to the wayside).

Mobile gaming isn't compelling enough to keep me into gaming. Hope at least PC gaming stays alive.

That's sort of what I was trying to get at.  Square Enix threw everything into mobile last gen (3 console titles from the Square side I count last gen).  They realized there's no longevity in it so they scaled back and are balancing.  It's what most of the publishers are doing.  EA stopped pouring money into mobile after a very good Mass Effect and a so so Dead Space.  Rovio's losing money cause people moved on from Angry Birds.  Draw Something?  Draw Nothing!  Mobile is good for pocket change now.  I guess Konami is gonna figure this out the hard way.

I feel like Konami is hitting the tail end of the mobile gaming boom. It's always going to be popular mind you, but a few years ago you couldn't blink without 3 new games being the "next big thing", now it seems to rest on a handful of titles while everything else gets ignored, at least developers are finally working within the limitations of touchscreen control.

Hmmm... this isn't good for the industry... or the future. I truly worry about gaming at this point. This is the 4th company to announce this.

Glad I kept all my consoles have a HUGE backlog so no dramas if they al go mobile one by one. Will probably be able to invest my money into stock instead haha.

They should sell their rights to publish console games to someone. I know they still need the overall rights to make smart phone games, but like what Nintendo has with Project Zero.
