basically it points out a few things that many people already noticed:

-during last year E3 there was a robot chicken where a Nintendo fan asked to Reggie about Star Fox and Mother 3, and this year surprise: Star Fox seems to be the focal point of the conference, so Mother 3 could be too.

-this year, in particular a few days ago it was the 20th anniversary of Earthbound and Lucas's DLC was announced to come out the 14 of June on that day.

The rice/bread thing in Splatoon is funny, because in a way it really exemplifies how rooted in japanese culture it is. Sure, it's a super accessible experience everyone can get into, yet, you still get this little poll that has most of the western world scatching their head over why anyone would eat rice for breakfeast.

On a side note, I have no idea what kind of bread that is supposed to be, in the bread picture. I might be totally wrong but it looks sort of 'sweet' to me, like a cinnamon bun or something would be. Any case it doesn't look like any kind of bread I'd eat for breakfeast. And having tried the rice-for-breakfeast thing, it's really nice too, so I'm almost temted to go for rice. Buut that's not the truth because mostly I do eat bread. I'm confused now... >____

Agreed, the game is strongly Japanese in everything from its style to its design philosophy. Even the hub is based on a real place in Tokyo.
