Smash 4 at Evo 2016 is now officially the biggest Smash Tournament turn out in history with 1900 entrants and counting, 2 years in and S4 has become a competitive beast the Smash team are going to have a nightmare trying to top the game in the next installment.
Edit: CEO tournament confirmed the Smash 4 section is the largest tournament of any game they've ever held, the game is on a tear.

Wow that's amazing! I wonder if the game will live after the next smash is released.

Yeah I feel the same way, but so far the community of this game is very strong so I can see it living after smash 5 (certainly it won't die as brawl did)

It's kinda crazy how this game evolved. Back in the early days, I always loved playing it but wasn't too fond of watching it (Apex 2015 was very boring), and I felt like the game maybe wasn't too deep and would sadly inevitable die. How times have changed. Nowadays, I don't even bother with Melee anymore. I find Smash 4 to be way more hype in every way, and every big tournament since the middle of last year has been so awesome and intense. And when it comes to playing the game, it's a great feeling when you realize how much you improved over time, and it makes me really happy to see how even here the local scene has grown, and improved too. |
There's a smash scene in Brazil? mZuzek at Evo 2017??!
But I do think 5mash will kill off Sm4sh rather quickly. The transition from Brawl to 4 was fast and easy because it was essentially a better, improved and deeper version of Brawl. I dont see Nintendo making any more drastic differences from Smash to Smash from now on, so every new Smash game released will move the competitive scene with it.
Or I could be wrong. That's more likely to happen.
Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

S4 has grown because unlike previous games the is no static metagame due to the constant patches to tweak and balance, the tier list in S4 is so close for the majority of the characters and as a result current players are encouraged to keep playing while new players have an easier time joining as the tier list doesn't root competitive players to a select few characters in order to do well. Players are also tapping into the mechanics now days unlike before.
The large viability of the characters leads to a bigger variation of the type of matches you see, I still watch Melee but now I find myself only bothering when certain characters or players are on otherwise I find that I'm only giving the game a glance every now and then.

You could be wrong, actually. I mean, Melee was pretty much just essentially a better, improved and deeper version of 64. They could very well change everything from 4 to 5 just like they did from Melee to Brawl. And yes, there is a Smash scene in Brazil, and a pretty decent one I guess. In my city, we have regular monthly tournaments with around 30-35 people, and biweeklies with around 15. It's hard to gather everyone together for a national tournament though - that only happened once last year, and resulted in a pretty big tourney with 115 players (I finished 17th, and yes I was disappointed with that). |
They could, yes. But I incredibly highly doubt it. Sm4sh is just what I think Sakurai wanted and will ever want for a fighting - party game AKA Smash Brothers. It's what he, and Nintendo, envisioned for the series.
And that is a good competitive scene man. Here where I live sm4sh is tiny. I went to an University where the players gather and there's not enough players to even make a bracket of 8. PM and Melee have a lot more people tho, but I've never played those games.
I"ll watch your match. You are allowed to brag

Well that's sad... and weird, too. I think mostly everywhere in the world Smash 4 is already bigger than Melee and PM is as good as dead (especially in NA where there's Nintendo sponsored tourneys and all). Here in my city, there wasn't any Smash scene until the release of Smash 4, so obviously there isn't one for any previous Smash games. I guess they are bigger elsewhere in the country, but still nowhere near as big as 4. |
Well it's mostly university students, and there was a scene long before sm4sh, so it's easy to understand why Melee dominates. Sm4sh will probably grow this next few months a lot because of the nationals that just went by this last month (but they were in Toronto, where the sm4sh scene is huge). Also, the fact that I have no car and still in highschool just makes it worse.
Btw, you popped off before the end of the game. Disrespectful

Wow. And I remember when this game was being dismissed and booed, people talking about how unbalanced Little Mac (lol) and Diddy Kong were and how the game would never be as serious as Melee and would die at EVO. Ah, good times xD
One reason that Smash 4 is doing so well competitively is that the metagame is pretty diverse (at least when compared to Melee and definitely Brawl)...
Another reason is that it's more approachable than the Melee community...
As cool as it may be to see competitive Melee in action, the community does not have the best reputation, and many of its member will go out of their way to tell you why your preferred Smash game is shit compared to theirs...
Smash 4 players are too busy demanding Sheik, Diddy, and Bayonetta nerfs to shit on anyone, so it's a lot easier to get into the community...
Have a nice day...
