But the thing is I don't think Driveclub lost points for lacking content. I'm not saying Splatoon should get a free pass.
I think a better comparison would be Mario Kart 8. It didn't really have a campaign and its battle mode was butchered, yet it still scored an 88. I feel that despite Splatoon's flaws, it will still score 80+ because of the quality of the gameplay, a unique campaign mode and smooth online.

They probably will mention the upcoming free DLC but they will also be reviewing the game's state as is at launch. |
Yes, a game with a main campaign with 28 levels, tons of gears with 24 different types of special abilities to combine with your clothes, at least 12 weapons (every weapon changes the gamplay a lot from what we´ve seen on the demo), a level system that will unlock more and more stuff while playing, a local multiplayer mode 1vs1 and two 4vs4 online modes that we haven´t seen before in any other game until date, specially turf wars, both very different modes, one being very quick and "friendly" and the other really competitive, the press is already talking of splat zones as if was already on the game because it is, the global condition to unlock it when there´s enough people to avoid online fustration finding people when there´s not enough is actually a smart and logical move. The game can actually provide you of dozens and dozens of hours of fun as it is NOW. The promise of being upgraded for free trhough the next months with tons of content, new modes and new stuff that wasn´t advertised before, is in fact, a very positive thing. And yeah, there´s no many maps, but everyone has very different strategies, people always play the same 3 - 5 maps everytime anyway and there will be at least 13 maps by the end of the summer.
You have to be a very stupid critic to give a low score for the content, imo.

Did that help Driveclub? |
Driveclub's problem was not lack of content but lack of working. And if I'm not mistaken Driveclube had free dlc was an apology for players buying it and, you know, not even working. That was a truly bad comparison.
Anyway, I can't understand how people say there'll be lack of content without even playing it. As far as we know it has 28 single player levels and a multiplayer mode. At least. People should wait for reviews or try the game and see how long it will have us engaged playing it before saying "lack of content".
Personally, it's addictive has hell, fun, excellent gameplay, has lots of free dlc that we know from the get go, single player campaign and multiplayer. I just don't see how this can possibly be "lacking in content" but ok. I'm sure most people will have hundreds of hours put into this game.

It just means reviewers should not take off 30 points for something that's confirmed to be rectified within weeks. |
Reviewers also shouldn't add points for content they haven't played. Review what's there and not what's promised to be there in a couple of weeks/months.

Exactly, what alot of reviewers "wont" do unfortunately. They'll include how things are missing despite it coming out vey soon. :-/

They have already played splat zones, the second online mode. It was presented to all the press all around.
It was very praised btw.

Not everyone likes the same things. |
But we are not giving a score based on how much appeal we find in the game, but predicting a reasonable score. And that prediction has no base at all.
