i didn't know the day 1 buyers get such little content. if reviewers are consistent this game will get slammed as they don't review non-released content.

honestly this is a good way to kill the community early. people may think 5 maps is enough when you only get an hour to play the beta but it will wear thin by hour 10. free is free but gamers are also impatient and critical.

The beta had 2. I could be playing the beta a week just with 2 maps and 4 weapons. Because is funny.

well then i hope you can find at least 7 players who agree with you but most gamers won't spend much time with something that repetitive.

Edit: I also have my doubts about the single player after I heard its only 28 levels.  Each level is gonna have to be over 17 min to even be a 8 hr game.

Super Mario Galaxy had something like 42 galaxies and lasted about 40 hours for the average player. If Splatoon's single player had the equivalent replayabiity for its levels, then that would be somewhere between 20-30 hours of single player. That's about three times longer than a Call of Duty single player.

 30 hours?
Nop, Splatoon camapaign is probably 6 hour, as Kirby RC that has the same number of levels. And that is fine for an Online game.

It's insane the lengths people will go to pardon this game. Any other online shooter released by any other company would have been absolutely crucified for daring to launch their game with only one online mode and 5 maps. I called the severe lack of content months ago, but even I wasn't pessimistic enough to consider that there wouldn't even be ample maps at launch.

Really? I felt like the actual situation is the extreme opposite.

It seems like, except from a small group of people, this game has only gotten hate from all corners of the world ever since it was announced it wouldn't have voice chat and custom games (which was false in the end). Right now, people seem to be looking at every inch of content this game has attempting to find something to bitch about and say it's crap. This includes you.

As I said on the other thread, this isn't more devoid of content at launch than Mario Kart 8 was.

From what I played, it didn't really feel yet like there are only 5 maps. Even just having 2 maps at a time during the Demo was something you didn't really feel because the map changes so much with the splattering.

@Spemanig: Did Evolve got crucified? If you want to compare Splatoon to any other game content-wise, that's probably the best one to do so as they have similarities on many levels. The main difference in the content philosophy is that in Evolve you have to pay for additional content while you get it for free at Splatoon. Evolve got criticized for it's moneygrabbing, but most reviews liked the gameplay and very few had anything to even say about the basic content - which means no bad thing to say about it. Since here the additional content comes for free, I don't think reviews or reception will be bad, as the things which went bad on Evolve are not present in Splatoon.

You can always count on critics to ignore common sense.

3D platformers tend to be longer than 2D platformers in general due to repetitive usage of the same levels for collection. I expect it to be 10-15 hours long, but if the levels are just as large and reused just as much as SMG's then 20-30 hours is a certainty.

40 is only if you completly 100% the game (all 242 stars) meaning replaying the game for challenge stars and replaying again with luigi.  the game itself is only about 8 hours.

if the single player level i saw was represenitive of the entire campain mode it will probably take about ~4 hours to complete.

There´s some replayability on the levels. You have to find a piece of the book, and that´s hidden, you can finish the levels without them but you have to explore a bit to get them all. The first levels are about 6 minutes long without looking for the paper for what I´ve seen, so no, expect something shorter, but probably very very good. And something very good, when is not cinematic stuff, is always very replayable. I hope next year we have some dlc with another campaign, I don´t even mind if it´s a pay dlc (but cheap please)

Sure, but each star is unique and collection is a key purpose of a 3D platformer. Also the average on How Long to Beat for the main story of SMG is 15 hours. The average for all play-styles is 28 hours.

A four hour long campaign mode would mean only 8 minutes per level (assuming the 28 level estimate.)

from what i've seen 8 min looks right to me.  the levels are very basic compared to mario galaxy.
