Forums - Gaming - PS4 and Xbox are 'absurdly powerful,' 1080p/60fps is 'just a starting point'

Speaking during an interview with GamingBolt, the studio's Mobeen Fikree commented on the technicalities of modern game development, and the significance of hitting that silky-smooth 1080p/60fps barrier.

Software development is always about making the right trade-offs for your project. A lot of AAA games benefit from going 30fps to push the limits on visual fidelity. Not just in polygon counts and animation, but more accurately simulating light, materials, etc. We Are Doomed is a twitch action game with a sharp vector art aesthetic. So for me, 60fps and 1080p were absolutely essential,” he said.

I think people like to latch on to “objective” technical figures, but honestly, 60fps/1080p is just the starting point. There’s a host of subtle features that matter so much more. I spent an inordinate amount of time implementing and iterating on the camera behaviour, screen shake effects, visual feedback systems, animation tweening, player movement, and so much more. These are all very technical, but subjective features. They can’t be measured, but can make or break a game just as easily.

"They are both absurdly powerful systems [PS4 and Xbox One], so achieving 60fps/1080p was pretty straight forward. Polishing up all the systems and effects took far more time, and improved the game by a considerable margin.”

Says the indie dev.

Whoa easy with silky-smooth 1080P/60fps talk on Xbox one, if it was that easy Witcher 3 would run 1080P on my Xbox One.

By the title I thought this was a thread from 2013 that it was bumped

We reap what we sow

Compared to my Casio calculator? I agree. Compared to what they could have been? No way.

I mean how can my 2010 PC outperform both? And it was a 600€ PC. (including nonsense like Scythe Mugen cooler, 5 case fans, cable management bequiet PSU and ~80€ NZXT PC case)

I dont understand what all this "horse power" talk is supposed to be...  I mean I can also run 1080p60 games on Xbox 360 or a PC from 2000. It just depends on what I am trying to run at 1080p/60. Call of Duty 1 would probably run at 8K/120 on PS4

The only thing I know for sure is that since this console generation was out of date on day1 they will even faster sacrifice FPS to get better looking games. And maybe we will end this gen with sub 900p games running at 25fps.

TW3 isn't 1080p on the X1 due to the game's graphical complexity and scale. If you aren't too concerned about either of those things (as would be the case with most indie devs), 1080p/60fps is a pretty easy target on the PS4 and X1.

Oh deary...well considering that the game looks like this...

...I have no doubts why they're finding them absurdly powerful.

2013 called. They want their thread back.

I feel like I just came back to 2013 with the "untapped power" articles were the main focus.

I swear indie devs are full of it when they say stuff like this and then some time down the road when they decide they want to bother with PC's they'll boast about what they can do, it's all fluff and BS at this point with those type of devs.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

.....no. This gen both companies played it safe with specs. I wanna see some monster rigs we call consoles for the next one.
