I can't see that ever happening again (unless they started releasing tiered consoles). High-end hardware is expensive, and neither Sony or MS can justify the losses needed to deliver that kind of hardware at a price the average consumer would be willing to pay.

I think it could become a possibility once game streaming is a big thing (not next gen, maybe in 3-4 gens). They could offer a pretty expensive and high powered home console for the enthusiasts that care about every ms of delay and the digital/streaming sceptics.



For simple 2D indie games, sure.
Even the Wii U is "absurdly powerful" in that respect.
