Forums - Gaming - Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 First Screens and details (Crossgen)

No PC, no Wii U and crossgen?, this is a trainwreck waiting to happen and the graphics look pretty damn dated.

TH hasn't been relevant for quite some time and honestly I don't seeing it being relevant now.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Can you give me any reason at all to believe this or am I just supposed to take you at your word? Mr Puggsly says COD and Tony Hawk have the same audience, so it must be true?

There is enough weirdness surrounding the rumored Wii U version of BO3 to see suspect that it might happen. Activision's silence regarding it is as baffling as it was for BO2 and Ghosts. I'm aware of the relationship between the PS2 and GBA versions of Tony Hawk games, my point was that Activision went to great lengths to make that game a strong IP on every possible platform 15 years ago, and now they seem content to settle for just a few platforms when they could be reaching a wider audience with far less effort than it took to make an entire game from the ground up.

I'd blame the developers if they can't get PS2 games to manage a stable framerate on the Vita. If Nintendo can get Wii games running on 3DS (or New 3DS), a competent studio should certainly be able to get a PS2 game to work on Vita. Anyway, comparing PS3 -> Vita ports to PS3/360 -> Wii was a mistake, because Activision did exactly that for Call of Duty and you just asserted that COD and Tony Hawk have the same fanbase. The Vita must be pretty much the definition of a core platform because the only Call of Duty game released for it is one of the best-selling games on the system despite being unanimously panned. That should indicate pretty well that Vita owners would buy THPS5 in droves even if it was an absolutely horrible port.

Well Tony Hawk basically became Jackass and the music was aimed at a more mature audience. Tony Hawk did better on core platforms and its not a coincidence.

Activision is silent about all BO3 ports outside of X1, PS4, and PC. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. The Wii U version will/would be the least popular port and Wii U fans will/would complain about the quality of the port.

Activision still cares about reaching wider audiences. They dropped mobile consoles and now focus on phones/tablets. Putting games on Wii U primarily reaches a small audience of Nintendo fans and casuals, that's why 3rd party support on Wii U is mostly dead.

No mistakes made, I didn't say it was impossible to port 7th gen games to Wii. I'm pointing out it wasn't a simple process. Neither is bringing PS3 games to Vita. When Capcom brought Dead Rising to Wii it was basically a remake using the RE4 engine. Likely because that was easier than porting the actual game.

Call of Duty sold well on Vita because it launched as a bundle game. You spew a lot of crap and clearly lack knowledge about what you speak about. If a CoD was bundled with Wii U it could have been a million seller there as well. Although, CoD on Vita was a fun multiplayer game.

I didn't know CoD appealed to the core audiences.

Hate to break it to you, but that shit is even more casual than Cooking Mama.

Sorry for calling it shit, it sounded funnier that way.

If CoD was casual then it would have sold 10 million on Wii.

Your overreliance on the tired rhetoric of Nintendo gamers being "casual" and other consoles being "core platforms" bores me. If you want to share your own thoughts next time, we can have a discussion.

This part of your argument is one of the bits I'm having a problem with.  Back in previous gens, Tony Hawk games were part of an IP Activision clearly saw lots of potential in - it was still growing and growing across each successive entry.  Since the 7th gen, pretty much, the IP has slowly been assassinated by poor entry after poor entry to the extent where it clearly wasn't viable anymore.  Right now, this game seems like quite a cynical attempt (even down to the naming) to cash in on the last bit of goodwill left in the IP - so comparing it to how things were 15 years ago is not a good comparison to me.  You seem to be making out that an extreme sports game in 2015 is something which has broad appeal and should be put on as many platforms as possible - that's just not the case any more.

Compare it to something like Skylanders.  A new IP with broad appeal, still growing that - coincidentally - does get ported to every platform under the sun (including WiiU and 3DS - not Vita still, admittedly).  It's not the best example due to it being a younger-skewed IP (which third parties don't have a problem putting on WiiU in general), but it's the best example I've got for now since Activision don't do a whole lot else apart from CoD.

As for the rest of your argument, I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here.  I'd rather we were still in an age where mid-level titles are made with reasonable budgets that make reasonable profits.  I'd rather games that were capable of being ported around to multiple platforms were ported around.  I'd rather publisher goodwill took precedent over short-term profits.  But I can understand the view that publically-traded company wants to see big profits, and there's a host of other options other than a minor goodwill profit from porting a game around these days that seem more attractive.

You need to accept the Nintendo audience at the moment differs from the Xbox and Playstation audience possibly more then ever. Much of the core gamers that enjoyed SNES, N64, Gamecube and even Wii jumped ship to Xbox and Playstation.

The people on Wii U are overwhelmingly casual or fans of Nintendo IPs. This is why Mario, Zelda, Skylanders, and Just Dance do fine there. While something like CoD and AC get lost in obscurity.

However, WiiU doesn't have a good sales history.

How many good third party games has the Wii U received at the same time as the other versions?

CoD BLOPS 2 and Ghosts? It only missed the DLCs because no one bought the games.

KLXVER said:

Not really. Attach rates on third party games are often bigger on Nintendo consoles...

Attach rates won't scale linearly with consoles sales. Do you think Activision prefers to sell 0.5M copies for 10M users with a 5% attach rate or to sell 2M for 80M users with a 2.5% attach rate?

Yeah, I don't consider yearly rehashes/releases to be good.

Do you opinion change the fact that a 3rd party tried to release a game, on par with the PS360 versions and it just flopped massively? Let me guess: any 3rd party game on the Wii U will either be a late port (so it doesn't count), a game that sold terribly (but you consider it bad, so it doesn't count) or one of the few you enjoy and that sold half-decent numbers?
