People only think the first is the best because they played it first. Same with OoT actually. At least that's my opinion on it.

Story? Prime 2 is a lot better (this includes scan logs).
Graphics? Prime 2 looks a lot better. Sanctuary Fortress still looks gorgeous today.
Bosses? This one is easy, Prime 2 is far superior in this regard.
Level design? Prime 1 had a lot of annoying platforming sections which don't work well in first person view. The Phazon Mines were just annoying imo. Prime 2 streamlined this.

I guess some people can't get over the difficulty of Prime 2 which is ok, it's not a game for everyone. Although it really isn't a hard game. Never unfair in the slightest.

This isn't supposed to be a discussion thread and we're getting quite off-topic here. However, I feel the need to reply to this. Hopefully I won't feel the same about further replies.

Ocarina of Time was my first 3D Zelda and it's neck and neck with Twilight Princess as my LEAST favorite of them. I don't have this whole "played it first" or "revolutionary for its time" bias.

Prime 2 has an interesting story, sure, but it only led up to a highly disappointing ending - the first game didn't really try too hard to make a story so it didn't have that problem. Also, Prime 2 started the whole "Samus is a badass" thing with stupid cutscenes that don't belong in Metroid, which is supposed to be all about immersion. I won't argue that Prime 2 looks better, but I don't think the difference is that big, in fact I find it barely noticeable at all.

I think Prime 1 has better bosses. The second game tried too hard to make the bosses way too gigantic, formulaic and just downright annoying. I probably feel like that because they were all in the Dark World and that just makes everything obnoxious. I didn't like a single boss in that game (have to say the extreme opposite for Prime 1), and I thought the final boss during the escape sequence was just about the most unfair and poorly designed thing they could have done. So I also disagree about the game never being unfair.

Level design is, in my opinion, Prime 2's most horrible flaw. The world of that game is just A PAIN to explore. When you look at the map, it's confusing. When you're just playing through it, it's confusing. Several areas have loads of rooms that feel like copy-paste and the exploration is done on an incredibly linear fashion which means if you need to get to the other side of the world you'll spend quite a bit of time going through the same annoying rooms over and over AND OVER. And that's not even touching the atrocious Dark World. That thing was so badly designed it hurt. It was completely segmented in tiny areas and the exploration was made even more linear, while having the terrible "lose health outside of beacons, recover when inside" mechanic which only meant I had to just stop and wait for 2 minutes everytime I got to a beacon.

Prime 1's world is the opposite. While vast, it's very well designed for exploration as it is easy to understand, memorize and the connections between each area are everywhere to be found. Unlike Prime 2, because you're getting area transports all the time, there's a lot more variety to the environments when you're exploring, and the roadblocks are unlocked in a natural way instead of them just feeling like they're locked for 95% of the game.

Edit: and about Metroid Prime being dead, well... fuck you people. You're all wrong.
Personally, I think all 3 of these games are overrated, but Prime was at least almost as good as people said.

No offence, but it sounds like the game was too hard for you. I beat the whole game without Dark Suit and one energy tank. The final Dark Samus fight is pretty easy and is in no way unfair. I have never lost to it. All its attacks are pretty easy to avoid and you're given plenty of time to beat her/it.

There's also no reason why you should have to wait 2 minutes in every light beacon if you're collecting the Dark Suit and as many energy tank as possible. I don't even do that on a non-Dark Suit run... I almost never stand still in light beacons. Prime 2 is also very easy to understand and memorize. I recently replayed it for the first time in 6 years or so and never got lost once. You've probably not played the game enough to understand and memorize the map. Like me with Prime 1, though I don't blame the game for that. I collected the 9 Sky temple keys in half an hour, how's that for memorisation of the world map? That was after 6 years of not playing the game. It took me far longer to collect the Artifacts in Prime 1. (again, because I'm not experienced in that game).

I don't think you should blame the game if you're simply not good enough for it. Don't play hard games if you don't like hard games.

As for variety in Prime 1: you have your generic lava world and ice world next to some pretty uninspired/generic human looking ruins. A farcry from the Aztec-inspired ruins in Bryyo in Prime 3.

Feel free to take it to my wall if you want to respond. If not then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

The game wasn't hard. I stopped in every light beacon because I cared about my energy, as any self-respecting player should. The final boss isn't unfair because her attacks are hard to dodge or whatever, but rather because the game does a TERRIBLE job of explaining (through either text or visuals) a desperate player how they're supposed to beat her.

"Morphology: Dark Samus. Unstable Phazon energy form. Target can generate shield immune to all forms of attack except Phazon energy. Draw in expelled Phazon for use as a weapon.
Dark Samus has temporarily become a being of pure yet unstable Phazon energy. She can generate a shield that is invulnerable to all attacks, save one -- blasts of Phazon energy itself. Use your Charge Beam to collect Phazon energy that she expels, then fire it back at her. Direct hits will overload and disrupt her essence."

They literally spell it out for you, what more do you want?

I hate how people unfairly treat MP2, sorry.

As for caring about energy like any self-respecting player should, I'm sorry but that's a load of bull and you know it. That's your choice to do that, you're restricting your fun with the game. I never have low energy when in the Dark World as the enemies are pretty weak and you're only there for short bursts of time. They're also very generous with health pickups.

They spell it out but it doesn't work like that. Not when she spends most of the time using another attack (that the game never even tells you exists) that you can't absorb whatsoever. It's especially harder to understand when you have a clock telling you you must do it in less than 4 minutes.

When the shield around her becomes bigger she'll shoot phazon shatter shots in the air which you can absorb. There's your visual clue. She'll do a missile attack that you have to dodge when the shield doesn't become bigger.

And you have 8 minutes, not 4... Let's keep it factual.

I'm not going to reply further after this because it's not the right thread and to be honest, anyone who honestly thinks Echoes is a better game than Prime is absolutely out of their mind.

That's not a good visual clue. The game never tells you she has any attack other than the phazon one, and since she's entirely made of like, phazon, it makes sense to think that the attack you should be absorbing is like, you know, the one she's actually using. But then it doesn't work once, twice, three, four times in a row and the naturally frustrated player thinks there's something wrong, as there are so many things wrong with this game.

And about the time, I know it's not 4 minutes. However, it's 8 counting from the start - naturally, during the process of escaping the tower, trying to jump right with the ridiculously awkward screw attack, getting to Dark Samus and beating her first (third?) form and scanning her fourth when you realize she changes, that takes a while. I don't remember how much time I had left when I first got to the unfair part, but it was certainly around 4 or 5 minutes. By then, I already got frustrated as the boss felt broken and I just couldn't take that game any longer. It was just annoying, unpleasant to play, with some really bad level design and EASILY the worst Metroid game I've fully played so far.

Prime 3 was a big improvement, but because of it's lackluster second half it fails to come even close to the first game.

You're honestly the first person I've ever heard complain about the final Dark Samus boss fight in that game, so I think YOU are the problem here, not the game.

You asked for textual clues, I gave you one. You asked for visual clues, I gave you one.

Watch this (and subscribe :p), there are plenty of people who like Prime 2 better or think it's on par with the first game. Feel free to take it to my wall, as long as you keep it civil. Stuff like the bolded part in your post is unneeded and unasked for.

We'll someone in here has far too high an opinion of their own opinion. Dismissing criticism of a game you like by simply saying "you're all just not good enough for it" is narrow minded *and* insulting. At this point, probably wise to lock this thread before it degenerates into further chaos.

I'm glad to see at least Super Mario Galaxy, one of the few games I've played from the list, has won. Might not be my favorite from the list, nor my favorite overall, but it deserved it more.
