Yeah, that's why the N64 and GC were more powerful.

2 out of how many generations?

2 out of 4. Which is half the generations (Sony was in).

Yeah, you just shot yourself in the foot there.

Did I say that all of nintendo's consoles were underpowered? No. Did you bother to read my post or did you just skim it until you saw something about nintendo? I'm not interested in another pointless debate about nintendo with you when it was not my intention to talk about nintendo at length in this thread.

Actually you did.

Third parties switched to Sony during the PS1-PS2 era despite the N64 and GC being more powerful. So you know, your argument doesn't make sense. The reason why third parties made the switch to Sony had to do with the CD driver and the fact that Nintendo wasn't very lenient with third party studios in the past.

I get it that you don't like the wii but there's no point in trying to diminish it. The wii is credited for bringing accurate motion controls to gaming, something that true gamers always dreamed of. the wii remote + nunchuck is the perfect control for shooters, it allowed games that weren't possible before and the motion + even allowed the likes of 1:1 sword control.

The Wiimote created unique experience for some games, but for the most part it controlled like a mouse pointer. I could argue Kinect and Move also created unique experience, but their impact on gaming hasn't been signficant.

If Wiimote was something "true gamers" dreamed of than the Wii would have sold better to core audience and Nintendo would have continued pushing it.

Wii sold a lot for true gamers, as well as it's games.

Hey, lets not get into a debate about what a true gamer is.

I'm just gonna point out its evident a vast majority of console gamers prefer playing games on a gamepad. The core gamers Wii had early on jumped ship. Also, the Wii has faded into obscurity more quickly than its competitors inspite of superior console sales. Maybe Wii didn't live up to the "dream" and that is part of the reason why Wii U is a failure.

Competition is always good. Speculation is just that. If PS never existed I guess PC gaming would be even bigger.
PC + Nintendo is my sweet spot so I would be fine with that.

So you never played games like Alundra, symphony of the night, Klonoa, Breath of Fire 3, Point Blank, Ridge Racer 4, Ace Combat, Silent Hill? The PS1 has tons of games who aged very well and a lot more games you havent even played yet for sure. The N64s library is pretty boring as a whole, 40% of its 400 game library are sports games, espacially for guys like me who dont like nintendo franchises in general this console.

The only reason why i bought and still keeping my N64 is to play the best console version of hexen and the only console version of starcraft, both games are some of the very view 2D sprites based games on this console by the way. But other than that i have zero interests in the other games you have mentioned. So perception is relative.

Symphony of the Night looks uglier than a SNES game if you ask me (Super Mario World 2 for instance). As for the other games, I either never heard of them or simply don't care. I have an anxiety disorder, so I avoid games with jumpscares like the bubonic plague (i.e. Silent Hill). Those PS1 horror games aged like crap anyway.

What I said in my post was true, the N64 classics are still often brought up, the PS1 classics much less so.

40% of the N64 library are sports games? If you say so, lol.

Perception is indeed relative, but that doesn't change the fact that many people consider the games I listed as classics still to this day.

If I wanted to play 2D sprite games, I'd get a SNES or GBA anyway. The N64 was the era of 3D games and that's what I'm going to rate it for.

And I was a little kid during the PS1 days, so I had no control over what games I got to play. But my friend had a modded PS1 to allow for pirated games, so I got to play a huge chunk of the library. I only mentioned the games I still have (fond) memories of.

Wrong, smphony of the night looks better than any snes game, see castlevania 4 and X how far the snes can go, not very much. Even the PC-engine had a better looking castlevania game.

Most people grew up with playstation not n64 therfor the playstation is widley more considered classic, the most vocal people are not the majority.

Where do you think gaming would be without PS?

PC

Not necessarily. Many people stop gaming after a certain age. Who knows how many more would have stopped (because it was no longer cool to do so), had ps not expanded the market. Also, how was sega's strategy working? Obviously it didn't work enough, hence their failure. But even if they had done alright (with ps out of the picture), they never had the money for the promotion that Sony has been doing since forever. Sega would never be able to afford that. They couldn't promote their brand the way, for example, Sony did with football games etc.

Considerably less though. And that's what's important here.

That sounds like a casual market, if you are needing a corporation to tell you what is hip or trendy to do.  I played video games growing up and still do, because I enjoy it.  Did I have a PlayStation?  Yes.  Is it the reason I still play video games to this day?  No.  I also had an N64 and a Sega Saturn.  My grandfather had an Intellivision (favorite games PGA Golf, PBA Bowling).  My dad played Coleco Vision (favorite game Carnival) and Super Nintendo (favorite game Sim City).  My uncle had an NES (favorite game Legend of Zelda).  My best friend's mom still plays RPG's on PS2, and his uncles play Madden on XBox 360.  Either you enjoy these things or you don't.  If you're just doing something that a corporation tells you to, you're going to hop on whatever band wagon comes along next

The Sega Saturn got torpedoed at E3 by Sony's announcement that the PlayStation would be $299 compared to Saturn's $399 pricetag.  Sega also botched their own launch by releasing the console 5 months earlier in May without bothering to mention it to their retailers who were promoting and planning for "Saturnday" in September, but that's another story.  However, if not for the PlayStation's existence and cheaper price tag, Saturn might have survived that misstep, probably not even feeling the need to rush their launch and therefore not irking their own retailers in the process.

Ps3 faced similar problems, if not worse, with its launch and still survived and ended up doing well. Why? Because Sony had the cash and the right people to turn things around. Sega was unlikely to fix problems in a new generation, had their last one done ok.

@first two bolded. I strongly disagree. Why do you think Apple and Samsung have been doing so well the past couple of years? Their products are considered "cool" by the masses. People do what companies tell them and will continue to do so. Apple is showing no signs of slowing down. Not only that, but now they have a crazy number of harcore fans who will buy anything and everything that apple releases. In other words, the casual market that you speak of, can become casual with the right strategy/ brand promotion. And why do you think handhelds are doing worse? It's not considered cool to own one any more. Having a tablet, iphone, etc is, though, hence people everywhere using one. You may not care about what people think, but others do. It's how things work whether we like it or not.
