Forums - Gaming - Mortal Kombat reveals first gay character

Tagged games:

First of all, will this change anything? No.
Secondly, was this the first gay character in a video game? No.

It sucks that we even have to mention it, because the proper response should be "Oh, he's human, like the rest of us." / end of story. Yeah, it seems very reasonable that with such a large cast, some could be homosexual. Some might also like the colour green. Cool, huh?

Don't blow this out of proportions. Give the nod of approval (because it is a good thing, but it is neither necessary nor revolutionary), and move on.

If even people who are gay pretend to be straight, why wouldn't bisexuals do the same?

These are anonymous surveys. Even if half are pretending despite it being anonymous, you still have under 10% gay and bi combined.

Everything was alreayd explained. feel free to keep disagreeing.

Exactly. Homosexuals exist in real life, so it's unrealistic not to feature them in games and other media.

Is there any particular reason you're so against this?

No one is against this.

A politically correct MK? What's next, politically correct GTA with particular focus on feminist empowerment?

This is going too far. It adds nothing to the art or direction of the game and is just a strategem to placate a politically vocal group in society. It's a shameless, tasteless money grab.

As such I must protest.

Has a video game ever done a coming out of the closet story? I think that would be a much more interesting way to introduce a character as gay. Maybe they are part of the story for a while, and then they come out the closet for whichever reason, and then the other characters deal with it in a respectable manner. I honestly don't see the point of making a new character and then saying, "oh by the way, he/she is homosexual/bisexual!" Alright, why do I care about his/her sexual orientation? I'd like for a gay/bisexual/lesbian chracter that is rounded and normal, who just realistically struggles with social norms which have ostracized them for this one portion of their being. That would interest me. Just labeling a character as non-heterosexual is not interesting. Making them a stereotype is even worse.

ooh i find this so interesting.
a coming out story would be interesting and fairly unique, especially in the gaming world. but what we're in more dire need of is for lgbtq's to be represented in gaming/film/art in a way where their sexual orientation doesn't matter. where they're normalized and just as boring/not boring as any other character. where their sexual orientation doesn't define them, just like how heterosexual characters usually aren't defined by theirs.
even in movies, which have been around for far longer than videogames, this is rather rare. at least movies have (sort of) moved on from portraying lgbtq's as crude token stereotypes, to telling stories about coming out, involving social norms and struggles etc.
i don't mind lgbtq characters being outed belatedly, i kinda like how jk rowling outed dumbledore lol. it's a great way to show that lgbtq's can be important and successful without being held back by (nor benefitting from) their sexuality.

He's just pointing out the extremely obvious fact that video games =/= reality. He never said or implied ANYTHING else.
