300$ with their single largest game? That would lose them a tremendous amount of money.

^ this. Halo 5 is how they hope to make money.

Giveing it away in a cheap bundle (at 299), with custom designed caseings, along with a bigger more costly HDD.

To me that just spells tons of lost earnings.

"It's a great deal, but only for the consumers.."

^ this is true as well though. A deal like that and you could see some xbox sales that would really skyrocket. Alot of people would like that sort of offer.

It would be 299 for 500 GB. And tell me how it results in lost earnings? Cause I've heard lots of people say the PS4 will have a 299 price cut.

if that continues to get worse than they might as well sell the xbox division off

They have invested BILLIONS into this brand and it is a very popular one worldwide. Thus there is no incentive to sell it. And telling by your avatar, I can tell your not the biggest fan of Xbox. But competition is needed. If sony was the only one in the core gaming market, I guarentee you they'd pull off another ps3, and this time there would be no one to compete. And anyway who'd buy the Xbox division. No one wants something that doesn't make money!

Lets take a trip down memory lane:

Here's the thing about the original Xbox: It wasn't making any money. It bleed cash so badly and for so long that it didn't turn profitable till the end of 2004. When Xbox manufacturing ended in 2005, Microsoft lost $4 billion.

Here's the thing about Xbox One: $400 Million loss for Microsoft in its first 8 months.

And, I think your idea will speed up what happened in the past.

You should not assume things about people, it is the wrong way to debate, and I'm holding your words for the bold. If Microsoft decides to sell its Xbox division, who will buy it? Amazon, Samsung, Apple, Google. Most likely Samsung.

Why? Samsung has had no interest in entering the market. And 400 million in the first 8 months? Compare that to the PS3 and Xbox 360, that's nothing. Oh and what about the PS3? It lost sony "only" 5 billion dollars, and sold around 60% of its predecessor the PS2. The Xbox One will not have a nearly as large drop, and will lose less for the company.

Lets not change the subject here. This is about your Xbox idea. A bad idea because I think it'll cost too much.

If you want to get technical then so be it. The difference with the PS3 is that Sony knew that they would be selling it at a lost. This was no surprise for them, as it costed them $800 to build, and sold for $600. They absolutely knew they would lose money but then gain profits at the end. The difference with MS and Xbox One is that they were not expecting to lose profits from all the investments they've made from the very start, but I think MS can do a comback, I wont rule that out.

^ well apperntly the PS4 is cheaper to make (even after the kinect was removed). (AND notice the PS4 usually isnt bundled with a game).

And this is not so much about the 299$ price tag of the unit, but more about the idea of the bundle with the Halo 5 game.

That game needs to go on sale for like 60$ and sell 10million copies :p

Its a cash cow.

Giveing it away for free is too costly.

Since there's no poll option for " No, I won't vote for this idea" I'll just leave it in a comment instead.

MS can not sell a console for 299$ with a game without losing a ton. A Halo 5 bundle for 329 or 350$ is inevitable, I do think they should experiment with more colors and larger HDDs though since its not replaceable like the PS4s

Yeah, thats what MS do when they're being competthird party game deal they done last holiday.

Yeah, thats what MS do when they're being competitive. Considering Halo will probably make its money back in launch week and its a 1st party game I don't think it'll actually be that costly. Not much more then the $349 X1+third party game deal they done last holiday

Well for starters, if we take the custom Batman PS4 + Archam Knight as an example, it costs $50 more than the regular black PS4 + Archam Knight bundle.
http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Batman-Arkham-Limited-Edition-4/dp/B00VETEZ34/ref=zg_bsar_videogames_7
And another thing to consider is that Microsoft have already been bleeding money with those crazy deals last holiday in order to increase the install base, not to mention the sudden unbundling of Kinect, which they likely had a lot invested in, and then the $50 price cut. Even though Microsoft have infinite piles of cash, there are investors who are in this to make money. And at some point after all their sacrifices, they would like to see periods of good profits. Halo 5 marks a good, if not the best, chance for that. It's a game that will sell itself and consoles in droves. So to bundle that particular game, along with a custom XBO at no extra cost, I'm not sure they'd want to do that.

I don't think Sony would bundle Uncharted 4 + Custom PS4 for free.

The game will sell itself, but not the console. Sure we may see a tiny boost, but Microsoft should really take the dry Sony and Nintendo holiday season and exploit it for their favor. They said they want to win, well then they must do the same thing Sony did with the PS3, fork out the money....

Difference is that PS3 was a financial disaster, and they had to do that just to even sell well at all. XBO is not even close to that situation.

The xbox is going to be 2 years old this November. At launch, it cost 397$ W/O kinect. You can't tell me its the same 2 years later. Its almost break even. In fact, buying 1 or 2 games could probably make it a profit. So I think they should do it.

They've already dropped the price prematurely due to pressure to keep up with PS4. And they've no doubt seen losses in the investments they've made with Kinect. These things also factor into future decisions. Now even if they could bring down the price of the console to $299 this holiday, which they very well may be able to, it's giving away their biggest cash cow Halo 5 and a custom XBO on top of that that's the problem. I can see one or the other working out, but I think all of it combined is too much. If they can't even stay calm for one moment with Halo 5 and simply enjoy profits, then when will they ever get the chance? That is the absolute best time for them to recoup some of their losses, instead of piling on even more.
I think a regular Halo 5 bundle will work just fine for them, and if people want a custom Halo XBO, they could pay $50 extra for it.

And what happens if the PS4 gets a price cut to 299? Microsoft should just keep the price at 349 and hope for the best?
