Forums - Microsoft - XOne update removes region-locking in China (reported by Chinese gaming websites)

Reports from China are indicating that a firmware update has removed regional restrictions on Xbox Ones in the country, leaving them able to play games imported from elsewhere in the world, and potentially play online with players from other countries.

The initial reports come from Hao Gamers, with other sites, such as MyDriversconfirming that international versions of games have been successfully installed on Chinese machines. Reports of access to international servers are as yet unconfirmed, but Microsoft has been contacted for clarification on the issue.

The Xbox One launched in China last September, reporting very healthy sales of over 100,000 units in its first week. Sony came late to the race for the newly opened market, launching alongside the Vita on March 20, but coming region-free as standard.

With that disparity now gone, the two machines are just settling in to slug it out. What's most surprising about the situation, however, is that the Chinese authorities have allowed it at all, given that it potentially undermines the complex and rigorous rules over censorship and regulation which govern the importation of nearly all media in the country - rules which it was presumed would also extend to games. That they seem not to is at least a fairly benevolent anomaly, not something which the Chinese government is known for.

Predictions about the potential vastness of the Chinese market are all but ubiquitous, but the console market was not widely expected to be so successful, and certainly not so soon. If this loophole over allowing previously outlawed content proves to be a decisive factor in that growth, then the Chinese government's response to it, and whether it chooses to extend the same privileges elsewhere, will be very interesting indeed.

Well, this is certainly great news for Chinese XOne owners, as well as for gamers there in general. Seems that the government is willing to remove restrictions, and by allowing imports it also basically allows any locally banned game to be played.

But still you cant change your region and store which means no digital games and DLC. Also, since the language of most games is related to region and language setting, only a handful not yet approved games(like Fifa and NBA 2K which have built-in languange change function) can display Chinese menu and subtitles.

Gotta keep backpedaling.

Everyone together now: "Thank-you Sony for driving a harder bargain with the Chinese govt to pave the way for removing region lock on Xb one."

Even if you can't get Chinese language content in most games (though I suspect Chinese versions are available in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia), and the Chinese digital stores are still content restrictive, I'm guessing a high proportion of people who play console video games can speak English. English is the international business, diplomatic and travel language, so it is a virtual must for anyone in China wanting to make it in this global era.

MS backpedals yet again but it's good news for xbox one owners in china.

This lock was created by MS and not Chinese government.

I don't know why they thought it was a good ideia after all the DRM talk before launch.

Now after PS4 launch without this kind of lock they removed again lol

If it's backpedaling, it would take longer than only 1 week after PS4 launch to update it(it's already happened in April update preview program).

No one know it is or not.

Interesting that the consoles being region free is allowed in China since their govt can be quite strict with censorship. As Sony and the PS4 demonstrated it`s okay to do, I don`t see why MS can`t do the same with theirs. I don`t really see a problem with MS doing this.

We don't know it's allowed or not, Sony and MS never publicly announced "it's region free now".

Like the recent update MS just secretly unlock it.

And someone keep saying it's 180 is not really right, otherwise it should be take month longer than only few days to done the update, because whatever monthly update they planned, it should be already decided month ago or even eariler.
