Nintendo actually has a lot of IP that are this way or can at least swing either way. Paper Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Fatal Frame, F-Zero (believe it or not, though it is very comic bookish), Golden Sun, Mother. What Nintendo needs to do is balance their production so that these IP release in tandem with their other IP. So instead of getting most of their lighter-hearted platformers and other IP and THEN their darker IP, you get them mixed together. IMO, the Wii had an excellent start with this in 2006-2007. Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid were highlights and represented a nice balance. If they could achieve that balance for a whole gen (and market) it could help their sales and brand image be more stable (as opposed to this gen where Nintendo started weak, got a bit worse, and then got better later when more diversification came along).
